Aritomo hands Yun Ling his favorite walking stick, walks alone into the mountain hills, and is never seen again.

Yun Ling decides not to excavate the Golden Lily treasure site and resolves to open Yugiri as a public memorial to her sister and Aritomo.

Yun Ling's journey begins with a grief-driven mission: to commission a Japanese gardener to build a memorial for her sister, killed in a wartime labor camp. Refused the commission, she accepts an apprenticeship instead, submitting to an arduous process of physical labor and emotional exposure that slowly dismantles her defenses. As her bond with Aritomo deepens into intimacy, she finally breaks her decades of silence and recounts the full horror of her wartime survival to him at a remote mountain temple. The tattoo Aritomo creates on her scarred back becomes the ultimate fusion of their relationship, transforming her trauma into art. Violence from the communist insurgency shatters the fragile peace of Yugiri, costing Magnus his life, and then Aritomo himself vanishes into the hills without a trace. Returning to the garden in old age, Yun Ling confronts the final revelation about what the tattoo conceals and chooses personal peace over excavating the past.

Tatsuji presents his theory that Tominaga ran the local Golden Lily looting operation and that Aritomo was likely complicit.

The world around Yugiri is charged with colonial violence, wartime secrets, and competing loyalties that press in on every character. The assassination of the British High Commissioner, the resettlement of Chinese farmers into New Villages, and the constant threat of communist attack define the atmosphere of the Malayan Emergency that frames Yun Ling's apprenticeship. Beneath the surface of daily life, hidden histories accumulate: Aritomo's mysterious jungle meetings, his covert identity as a tattoo artist, and his secret exchange of land for a tattoo on Magnus all point to a past deliberately obscured. Yun Ling herself is drawn into the political machinery, pressured by British intelligence to spy on Magnus and implicated by her own arrangements for a communist's surrender. The gradual uncovering of the Golden Lily operation, first glimpsed in a war criminal's dying confession and later assembled by Tatsuji's research, reveals that Yun Ling's entire wartime experience was part of a vast imperial conspiracy.

Yun Ling releases Emily's paper lantern into the night sky, completes her memoirs, and finds peace watching the lotus flowers open at dawn.

Running beneath the visible story is a deeper current of private revelations, confessions, and irreversible choices that reshape who Yun Ling is. The decision to write her memories down, the recognition that Aritomo knew her camp overseer, and the gradual dissolution of her emotional armor mark the early stages of an inner transformation wrought by the apprenticeship. Key figures around her offer their own damaged histories: Magnus with his Boer War imprisonment, Aritomo with the deaths of his family and his disgrace, and Tatsuji with his confession of wartime atrocities and the story of a lover who died in his place. Yun Ling's own moral complexity surfaces when she admits to Aritomo that she survived the camp partly through collaboration, a confession that strips away her self-image as a pure victim. The final turning points collapse past and present together: the horimono is revealed as a map, the treasure site is identified as Yun Hong's likely grave, and Yun Ling makes her last act of agency by choosing silence, releasing the lantern, and accepting the impermanence of all things.
