The novel opens with Laura, a suicide helpline volunteer, secretly using two phone lines to orchestrate a joint suicide at a coastal cliff, guiding a pregnant woman and a man named David to their deaths. Months later, Ryan Smith discovers his pregnant wife was one of Laura's victims and invents a suicidal persona to infiltrate the helpline and identify her. Their escalating cat-and-mouse game culminates in a violent physical confrontation at a trap house Ryan has prepared, after which both characters regroup and intensify their campaigns against each other. Laura engineers Ryan's professional destruction by framing him for grooming, then murders her colleague Janine and frames Ryan for that crime as well, driving him to take his own life at the same cliff where his wife died. With Ryan gone, Laura appears triumphant — promoted at the charity and her family forcibly returned under her roof — but an anonymous email containing a recording of her manipulating callers signals that someone still knows her secrets.

While running her predatory scheme at End of Line, Laura maintains a careful domestic and professional facade — visiting her disabled son at his care facility, attending victims' funerals to collect trophies, and performing as the office's maternal figure. Her covert surveillance of callers and her obsessive monitoring of her daughter Effie's digital life reveal the micromanagement at the heart of her existence. Ryan, meanwhile, methodically constructs his infiltration of Laura's world, surveilling her family and coaching his elaborate suicidal persona, while his brother Johnny watches his transformation into a manipulator with growing alarm. The two antagonists circle each other through escalating provocation — Laura desecrating Charlotte's wedding dress, Ryan breaking Laura's window in a rage — with each using the people around them as disposable pawns. The aftermath of Ryan's arrest and suspension leaves him publicly destroyed and abandoned by family, while Laura moves her pieces into position for the final, fatal stages of her campaign.

The novel's most pivotal turning points cluster around revelations that force characters — and the reader — to reinterpret everything that came before. Tony's confrontation of Laura with her social services file and Laura's rooftop memories of her mother's death and her father's murder-suicide expose the traumatic foundations of her compulsions. Ryan's investigation gains crucial momentum through Charlotte's hidden files, the police's revelation about the helpline calls, and his grandfather's ambiguous blessing for revenge. The two protagonists' conflict is repeatedly redefined by new intelligence — Laura realizing she manipulated Ryan's own wife, Ryan learning from Tony that Nate and David were the same person and that Laura caused Henry's disability. The endgame arrives when Johnny confronts Laura at the care home with the truth about the fire, Tony unknowingly kills him, and Laura weaponizes the moment to blackmail her family back under her roof. The novel closes with Effie stepping out of the shadows as the secret archivist of her mother's crimes, transforming from pawn into avenger.
