Kara deliberately presses her full weight on her injured knee and uses the agony to mask her thoughts, escaping the hunting entities.

Kara seeks refuge at her uncle Earl's eccentric taxidermy museum after her divorce and discovers an impossible corridor hidden behind the drywall. Together with her friend Simon, she ventures through a mysterious bolted door into a foggy other world filled with islands, willows, and terrifying invisible entities. After encountering the mutilated Martin Sturdivant and barely escaping back to the museum, the two patch the hole and try to resume normal life. A strange wooden carving Kara brought back begins animating the museum's taxidermy, culminating in a possessed giant otter tearing the sealed portal open again. Kara lures the creature back into the willow world, where the museum's beloved taxidermy mounts rise to defend her and a sacrificial act buys her precious time to flee. Kara settles into museum life, cataloging its quirky collection and building a friendship with the eccentric barista Simon next door. A mysterious delivery from her uncle's associate Woody introduces the sinister corpse-otter carving, an object Kara unknowingly places near the site where a portal will soon form. When the impossible corridor is discovered, Kara and Simon document their findings methodically — installing a deadbolt, marking their bunker, and identifying the willow world as the vacuae from a soldier's logbook. After returning home, they try to process their experience through online searches and shared evenings, while the museum begins showing alarming signs that something is still very wrong. A missing stuffed raccoon, a midnight cat fight, and Kara's growing dread all signal that their patch job is far from sufficient. Ultimately, Kara accepts the costs of survival — permanent injury, lingering trauma, and a deliberate choice to make the Wonder Museum her true and lasting home.

From the moment Uncle Earl offers Kara a lifeline, the novel builds toward a cascade of revelations that dismantle her understanding of reality. Simon's unusual chimera eye introduces the unsettling idea that perception is deeply limited, while the discovery of the wall's dual nature confirms that the laws of physics are locally unstable. Cryptic bunker graffiti and terrifying encounters with the willow world's entities force Kara and Simon to piece together the rules of a world that defies all human comprehension. Key texts — a soldier's journal and an alternate-universe Bible — deliver crucial survival knowledge, including the stunning fact that intense physical pain can shield a person's thoughts from predatory creatures. Personal revelations run parallel to the supernatural ones, as Mark's confession of infidelity lands with striking insignificance compared to what Kara has now endured and survived. When the carving's true role is finally exposed and Sturdivant sacrifices himself in the chaos, Simon permanently seals the portal, allowing Kara to begin the slow and permanent work of healing on her own terms.
