Ryan briefs the president and Joint Chiefs, arguing that Ramius is attempting to defect with Red October.

The president sends Ryan aboard USS Kennedy and then HMS Invincible to brief naval commanders in person.

Captain Marko Ramius kills his political officer and steers Red October toward the United States, setting off a crisis between the two superpowers. CIA analyst Jack Ryan is pulled into the operation after identifying the submarine's revolutionary silent drive and convincing the president that Ramius is attempting to defect rather than attack. Ryan races between naval vessels briefing commanders, while American and Soviet forces converge on the Atlantic. A plan to evacuate Red October's unwitting crew and fake the submarine's destruction is devised and set into motion. Ryan boards the submarine, Ramius formally offers it as a gift, and a decoy vessel is scuttled to deceive the Soviets. The mission nearly unravels when a Soviet submarine hunts Red October down, but Ramius's bold decision to ram the attacker seals the defection and delivers the prize to American shores.

The headline events of Ramius's defection and the race to secure Red October.

Soviet officials in Moscow accept the theory that Ramius was framed and manipulated into appearing to defect by Polish intelligence agents.

Four Soviet enlisted men evacuated from Red October choose to defect after the rescue ship Pigeon arrives in the United States.

While Ramius steers Red October westward, characters across multiple locations take actions that quietly determine the mission's outcome. Sonarman Jones on Dallas first detects the caterpillar drive by ear, and his persistence gives the Americans their only lead on Red October's position. Soviet officials discover they have a GRU agent aboard Red October and issue orders for him to destroy the submarine from within. A deadly reactor accident on another Soviet submarine, staged aerial confrontations between US and Soviet forces, and the exposure of an American spy all raise the stakes as both sides maneuver. American and Soviet officials exchange lies through diplomatic channels, and a carefully planted piece of debris helps convince the Soviets that Red October is gone. The operation concludes with four Soviet sailors choosing freedom and the Soviets reluctantly accepting the American cover story.

The supporting characters, parallel actions, and behind-the-scenes moments that shaped the defection.

The defection hinges on a chain of critical revelations and decisions made under pressure on both sides of the Cold War. Ryan's analytical instinct to investigate Red October's strange hull doors leads directly to understanding the submarine's value, while Cardinal's intelligence report transforms a guess about defection into an urgent race against Soviet destruction orders. On the American side, a series of difficult judgments must be made — whether to trust Ryan's theory, how to contact Ramius without detection, and whether a desk analyst should board a Soviet submarine. The situation grows desperate when Red October loses all power and the helicopter team crashes, forcing improvisation at every turn. The GRU agent's attack inside the missile compartment nearly ends the mission in catastrophe, but Ryan and Ramius eliminate the threat together. The final image of Ryan sleeping peacefully on a plane — despite his lifelong fear of flying — quietly signals how much the mission has changed him.

The key discoveries, decisions, and pivotal shifts that determined the mission's outcome.
