Deborah dies of a heart attack before the book she spent years helping Skloot research is published.

Henrietta Lacks visits Johns Hopkins hospital and receives a devastating cancer diagnosis, while surgeons secretly take tissue samples that become the world's first immortal human cell line. While Henrietta suffers through failed treatments and dies, her cells are shipped around the world and prove essential to developing the polio vaccine. For decades her identity is obscured by false names, and her family has no idea her cells exist. After George Gey's death, Henrietta's true name is finally published, setting off a chain of events that brings journalist Rebecca Skloot to the Lacks family's door. The pool follows the full arc from Henrietta's diagnosis through Skloot's research, culminating in the family finally seeing the cells and Deborah's death before the book is published.

Skloot visits Turner Station and meets Courtney Speed, who is building a foundation to create a Henrietta Lacks museum.

Sonny Lacks undergoes a life-saving heart surgery and is left $125,000 in debt because he has no health insurance.

Henrietta Lacks grew up in poverty in Virginia, where her family's ancestors had worked as slaves, before marrying her childhood companion and building a life in Baltimore. After her death, her children were subjected to years of abuse, while the scientific world wrestled with the ethical fallout of unauthorized human experimentation and HeLa contamination. The Lacks family faced relentless hardship — Joe's imprisonment, Deborah's discovery of a book publishing her mother's most painful medical details, and a conman's exploitation of their grief — while remaining invisible to the scientists profiting from Henrietta's cells. The scientific community itself was reckoning with the ethics of using patients without consent, culminating in resignations, legal cases, and professional scandals. The family's poverty persisted into the twenty-first century, starkly illustrated when Sonny faced crippling medical debt for a life-saving surgery paid for with no health insurance.

After her death, the dehumanizing reality of medical research is crystallized when a lab assistant finally sees Henrietta as a person, while her children are left to navigate abuse and silence with no one to advocate for them. Decades later, journalist Skloot builds trust with the family through a series of emotionally charged encounters — meeting the initially hostile Zakariyya, uncovering the truth about Elsie's brutal treatment at Crownsville, and being physically confronted by a terrified Deborah. A spiritual turning point arrives when a preacher cousin performs a soul cleansing on Deborah and symbolically passes her burden to Skloot. The pool concludes as a national tragedy on September 11 derails a conference honoring Henrietta, and Deborah suffers a stroke that reveals how much the journey has cost her.
