Police arrive at Cho Oyu to investigate the robbery and tear apart the cook's hut searching for evidence.

The local college sends Gyan, a young Nepali graduate, to Cho Oyu as Sai's physics tutor.

Sai and Gyan spend weeks tenderly mapping each other's anatomy, turning their tutoring sessions into a slow courtship.

Biju calls out for his father at the Cho Oyu gate, and the cook rushes to embrace him.

The novel opens with a violent robbery that humiliates the judge and sets everything in motion. Sai's romance with her tutor Gyan becomes entangled with the growing GNLF insurgency, as Gyan's political radicalization leads him to betray her and expose the household. The escalating conflict reaches a breaking point when the cook witnesses a massacre at the treaty burning, and the family loses the judge's beloved dog Mutt to desperate locals. In New York, the cook's son Biju has endured years of hardship as an undocumented worker and finally decides to come home, only to be robbed and stripped on the road to Kalimpong. The novel closes with the reunion of father and son at the gate of Cho Oyu, a moment of warmth amid so much loss.

Biju befriends Saeed Saeed, a charismatic Zanzibarian coworker at the Queen of Tarts bakery.

The cook boasts to everyone in Kalimpong about Biju's imagined success as a restaurant manager in New York.

Biju and his coworkers pay for forged green cards but realize weeks later they have been completely scammed.

A whole mouse is found baked into a Queen of Tarts loaf, and the health department shuts the bakery down.

Biju buys a one-way ticket for Calcutta from a travel agent and packs New York souvenirs to take home.

Sai watches the judge beat the cook in the bedroom and resolves that she must leave Cho Oyu.

Biju's life in New York unfolds through a series of restaurant jobs, each marked by exploitation, loneliness, and the constant fear of deportation. He finds brief companionship with Saeed Saeed and attempts to reclaim his identity by refusing to work where beef is served, eventually landing at the Gandhi Cafe under the thumb of the mercenary Harish-Harry. Back in Kalimpong, the GNLF's growing power exposes the vulnerability of westernized residents like Lola and Noni, whose comfortable enclave is invaded and humiliated. The police's brutal treatment of an innocent man and the community's collapse into ethnic hostility reveal how deeply the insurgency has fractured everyday life. By the novel's end, both Biju and Sai are driven toward departure, each reckoning with the cost of the lives they have been living.

Gyan follows the cook outside a canteen and solemnly promises to find Mutt and make things right with Sai.

The novel's backstories reveal how deeply colonialism has shaped its characters long before the present action begins. The judge's humiliation at Cambridge poisons his sense of self and drives him to abuse his wife Nimi with murderous cruelty, a secret that haunts Cho Oyu throughout the narrative. Sai's orphaning and arrival at the judge's house establishes her as a fellow exile, while Biju's early hustle to obtain a tourist visa shows how precarious his American dream was from the very start. Key turning points in the present — Gyan's relief at escaping the GNLF, the judge's cold betrayal of Bose, and Biju's emotional return to Indian soil — reveal characters stripped of their illusions. These revelations collectively show that loss is inherited not just through grief but through the choices, compromises, and silences passed down across generations.

Hidden histories, private betrayals, and the moments that reshape each character.
