The novel follows two interlocking timelines, opening with journalist Ellie Haworth discovering a passionate 1960s love letter in her newspaper's archives. The letters reveal the affair between Jennifer Stirling and Anthony O'Hare, which begins on the French Riviera and deepens through weeks of secret correspondence in London. Their romance is violently interrupted when Jennifer is injured in a car crash while rushing to meet Anthony at a train station, after which her husband exploits her amnesia to erase Anthony from her life entirely. A brief reunion years later is quickly smothered by a fresh lie, leaving the two lovers separated for four more decades. In 2003, Ellie's investigation exposes the truth, inspires her to end her own hollow affair, and ultimately brings Jennifer and Anthony back together in the same London park where they first kissed.

In the 1960s, every turning point is charged with frustrated desire and withheld truth, from Anthony's disarming roadside apology to Jennifer's last-minute decision to finally choose him over the safety of her marriage. The discovery that Anthony is supposedly dead becomes Jennifer's most devastating capitulation, locking her into guilt and submission for years.
