From the moment Mr. Shiftlet walks up Mrs. Crater's road with his arms outstretched like a crooked cross, the story plants seeds of deception and foreboding in its surface details. His colorful self-presentation — listing past lives as a gospel singer, railroad foreman, and undertaking parlor assistant — masks the calculating mind underneath. During the farm work period, he examines the automobile that will become his true obsession and delivers a speech about assembly-line manufacturing that hints at his disdain for modern impersonality. The marriage negotiation reveals Mrs. Crater's willingness to misrepresent her daughter's age, while the courthouse ceremony leaves Shiftlet visibly dissatisfied. On the road to Mobile, small symbolic moments accumulate — Lucynell pulling cherries from her hat, a reddening sun setting like a warning, a gathering storm — until Shiftlet's closing prayer for God to cleanse the world rings with bitter irony.

Shiftlet's early speeches about the unknowable human heart, his own moral intelligence, and the scarcity of innocent women reveal a man who holds others to standards he cannot meet himself. The negotiation phase lays bare both characters' true motives: Mrs. Crater methodically lays her bait while Shiftlet steers every conversation toward the car, even pausing to consider that a mute wife could never argue back. After the unsatisfying wedding ceremony, Shiftlet's morose and bitter expression signals that he never intended to honor his commitment. His fleeting reflection on a driver's responsibility to others — offered moments after abandoning his disabled wife — captures his bottomless capacity for self-delusion. The story closes with the roadside sign that gives it its title, a dark punchline suggesting the only life Shiftlet ever meant to save was his own.
