The Major addresses the assembled boys, advises them to conserve energy, and the Walk begins at the signal.

Garraty impulsively runs off the road to kiss a cheering girl holding a sign and receives his first warning.

Curley develops a charley horse, fails to maintain pace while trying to rub it out, and is shot dead.

Garraty's mother fails to stop him from joining the Walk, and the Major sets the brutal terms in motion as the boys begin dying one by one for falling below pace. Garraty forms a fragile bond with McVries and Baker while sizing up rivals like Barkovitch and Stebbins. The boys' attempts at rebellion — from McVries charging the half-track to the collective raspberry salute — are swiftly and violently crushed. The Walk reaches an emotional peak as Garraty nearly gets himself killed reaching for his mother and Jan in Freeport, and Parker's armed uprising is extinguished almost instantly. McVries and Stebbins both fall in the final miles, leaving Garraty as the last Walker standing. Traumatized and delirious, Garraty wins but cannot stop moving, running toward a figure he can no longer identify.

The Walk's most defining moments, from the starting gun to the final step.

Garraty meets Peter McVries at the starting assembly and the two boys introduce themselves to Baker and Olson.

Toland faints from exhaustion in the heat and is immediately shot by the accompanying soldiers.

Harkness develops a debilitating foot cramp after discarding his shoes and is shot before the Walk reaches Freeport.

Garraty's entire high school class cheers him on from the roadside during a grueling uphill stretch of the Walk.

Garraty loses control of his bowels in front of the jeering crowd and receives a warning while trying to recover.

Scramm and the Hopi brother Mike sit together on the ground, flip off the soldiers, and are shot together.

Baker says his quiet goodbyes to Garraty, acknowledging that his death is very close.

The Major arrives in his jeep to salute and congratulate Garraty as the winner of the Walk.

The Walk's early stages reveal how the boys navigate spectatorship, media, and sudden death in ways that rarely make the headlines. From Harkness's ambition to document the event to Scramm's televised profanity, the boys constantly interact with a propaganda machine that carefully shapes the Walk's public image. The deaths of Ewing, Toland, and Harkness illustrate how quickly confidence collapses into despair as the miles accumulate. Percy's mother's arrest and Garraty's high school class cheering from the roadside underscore both the cruelty of the spectacle and the Walk's role as a national ritual. Scramm and Mike's quiet solidarity in death and Abraham's bitter realization that he joined on a whim capture the range of how boys reckon with their choices too late. The pool closes with Baker's resigned farewell to Garraty and the Major's arrival to acknowledge the one survivor his system produced.

Pool 3 traces the moral and emotional awakening of Garraty and his companions as the Walk strips away their illusions one by one. From Garraty's childhood memory of his father's dissidence to Gribble's outburst against the Major, resistance is shown to be both instinctive and futile. Key confessions — Baker's shame about his past, McVries's admission of a crush, Stebbins's revelation about his parentage — expose the boys as complex and conflicted beneath their bravado. Small acts of humanity, like sharing watermelon and collectively promising to care for Scramm's wife, offer rare warmth against the Walk's relentless cruelty. The pool builds toward Stebbins's devastating confession that he entered the Walk to earn his father's recognition, making plain the monstrous personal stakes at the heart of the competition. McVries's early prediction that everybody loses proves prophetic, and Garraty's final act of storytelling for his last two companions carries the full weight of everything the Walk has cost him.
