Spade calls the police on Gutman, Cairo, and O'Shaughnessy after she confesses to killing Miles Archer.

A woman calling herself Miss Wonderly walks into Sam Spade's detective agency and hires him and his partner Miles Archer to tail a dangerous man named Thursby, setting the novel's deadly chain of events in motion. Both Archer and Thursby turn up dead the same night, and Spade finds himself navigating a web of lies as the client reveals her true identity as Brigid O'Shaughnessy and a man named Cairo offers a fortune for a mysterious black bird statuette. Spade is drawn deeper into the conspiracy when he meets the powerful and secretive Casper Gutman, who reveals the statuette is a centuries-old jewel-encrusted falcon worth an unimaginable sum — before drugging Spade to keep him from acting on the information. The pace accelerates when the falcon's captain staggers into Spade's office and dies, leaving the statuette behind, and Spade must hide it and outmaneuver Gutman's armed group to survive the night. When the falcon is finally examined, it proves to be a worthless lead fake, unraveling everything everyone has fought and killed for. Spade ends the case by doing the one thing everyone expected him not to do: turning O'Shaughnessy over to the police after she confesses to killing his partner.

Effie confronts Spade the morning after about turning O'Shaughnessy in to the police, and Iva arrives at his office.

While the main plot races forward, a series of secondary encounters steadily complicate Spade's position at every turn. Archer's fatal overconfidence, Iva's jealous accusation, and Spade's cold-blooded decision to pocket nearly all of O'Shaughnessy's money establish the morally murky world Spade inhabits from the very first chapters. Cairo's second gunpoint search of the office and Wilmer's persistent shadowing of Spade signal that additional dangerous parties are circling the case before Spade has even learned what the falcon is. A chaotic evening at Spade's apartment — police at the door, Cairo screaming for help, and Spade talking his way out with a fake story — shows his ability to improvise under pressure while keeping everyone off balance. As the investigation matures, lunch with Polhaus, a confrontation with the district attorney, and a grim discovery of Gutman's drugged daughter fill in the conspiracy's edges and expose the failures of official law enforcement. The pool closes with Effie's quiet moral reckoning the morning after, a reminder that Spade's choices carry a human cost beyond the case file.

The supporting encounters and side moments that shape Spade's investigation.

Gutman is caught palming a missing thousand-dollar bill and admits he pocketed it deliberately to test how Spade handles betrayal.

O'Shaughnessy confesses to Spade that she shot Miles Archer using Thursby's gun specifically to frame Thursby and remove him from the picture.

From the very first night, small revelations begin chipping away at the official version of events: Dundy's challenge to Spade's alibi and Effie's offhand comment about Iva's whereabouts both hint that the murders are far more tangled than they appear. The tense evening at Spade's apartment — where O'Shaughnessy traces a G in the air, physical violence breaks out, and she later confesses she can no longer distinguish her own lies from the truth — marks a turning point in how Spade understands both the case and his client. After being drugged and humiliated by Gutman, Spade's methodical recovery work — a torn scrap of newspaper in Cairo's hotel room, a word from Effie about a burning ship — quietly assembles the trail that leads back to La Paloma and the falcon. The long negotiation in Spade's apartment yields its own cascade of revelations: Gutman's account of the two murders, the palmed thousand-dollar bill he uses to test Spade, and the moment Wilmer is finally surrendered as the fall guy all expose the group's hollow loyalties. When O'Shaughnessy at last confesses to killing Archer, Spade's decision to turn her in completes the arc — not as a betrayal, but as the only outcome his moral code ever permitted. These are the moments where the truth, however evasive, finally surfaces.

The key discoveries and decisions that crack the case open and seal everyone's fate.
