Pellegrina tells Edward and Abilene the story of a beautiful princess who loved no one and was turned into a warthog.

Pellegrina whispers "You disappoint me" into Edward's ear the night before the family sets sail to England.

Two boys on the ocean liner snatch Edward from Abilene and throw him overboard into the sea.

Edward lies face-down on the ocean floor for months, afraid and completely unable to move or call for help.

A violent storm lifts Edward from the ocean floor, and a fisherman named Lawrence catches him in his net.

Lawrence brings Edward home to his wife Nellie, who names him "Susanna" and sews him simple handmade clothing.

Lawrence and Nellie's visiting daughter Lolly secretly throws Edward into the garbage when her parents aren't looking.

A dog digs Edward out from under the garbage pile and carries him to a hobo named Bull.

Bull renames Edward "Malone," dresses him in vagabond clothing, and travels the open road with him for many years.

A railway worker kicks Edward out of a moving railcar, separating him from Bull and his dog Lucy.

A boy named Bryce takes Edward down from a garden scarecrow pole and gives him to his dying sister Sarah Ruth.

Sarah Ruth dies, and a diner manager named Neal smashes Edward's head against a counter when Bryce cannot pay for a meal.

Expert doll-mender Lucius Clarke repairs Edward's broken head and places him on display in his shop for resale.

Grown-up Abilene enters the doll shop with her daughter Maggie and recognizes Edward by the gold pocket watch he carries.

The novel opens with Edward Tulane, a self-centered china rabbit living in luxury with his young owner Abilene, who loves him deeply despite his inability to return her affection. After being thrown overboard at sea, Edward is passed between a series of owners — a fisherman and his wife, a traveling hobo, and finally a dying little girl named Sarah Ruth — each of whom loves him wholeheartedly. Through these encounters, Edward slowly learns to open his heart. The loss of Sarah Ruth breaks him completely, and after his head is smashed in a Memphis diner, he is repaired and placed in a doll shop for sale. Years of waiting on the shelf eventually give way to hope, and grown-up Abilene discovers Edward in the shop, reuniting the two at last.

Lawrence carries Edward on his shoulder through town, telling him that Nellie has "had her sadness" but is a good woman.

Nellie places Edward in a highchair at the dinner table and talks to him warmly while she and Lawrence share their evening meal.

Lawrence takes Edward outside at night and teaches him the names of the constellations one by one.

Edward's heart calls out "Nellie. Lawrence." for the very first time at the moment Lolly discards him into the trash.

Ernest, a short man who declares himself king of the garbage, finds Edward on the trash pile and claims ownership of him.

Bull sews Edward a sweater from his own hat and fashions pants from handkerchiefs, declaring Edward now has "the proper outlaw look."

Around hobo campfires, vagabonds begin treating Edward as a trusted confidant, whispering the names of the loved ones they left behind.

Bryce ties twine around Edward's arms and makes him dance so that Sarah Ruth laughs until she has a coughing fit.

Sarah Ruth's health sharply declines as she stops eating entirely and begins coughing up blood.

Bryce visits Lucius Clarke's shop to say goodbye to Edward; Lucius refuses to let Bryce hold the repaired rabbit.

Beyond the headline events of his journey, Edward's story is shaped by smaller, intimate moments that reveal how each of his owners cares for him and how he slowly changes in response. From Abilene's tearful farewell on the dock to Lawrence teaching Edward the names of the constellations on starlit evenings, Edward is quietly transformed by the attention and tenderness people show him. The vagabonds who confide their sorrows around campfires, and young Bryce who makes Edward dance to bring laughter to his dying sister, all leave lasting marks on Edward's heart. Each separation — whether thrown into garbage by a spiteful daughter or kicked from a railcar by a cruel worker — is felt more keenly than the last. Even Bryce's poignant goodbye at the doll shop encapsulates the novel's recurring truth: to love is to eventually let go.

The everyday moments and quiet connections along Edward's road.

Kicked from the railcar and lying alone in the dark, Edward wonders how many times he will have to leave without saying goodbye.

An antique china doll echoes Pellegrina's words, telling Edward he disappoints her and offering to help him fall from the shelf.

Edward's heart stirs with hope after the antique doll's words, and he begins to wonder whether someone could love him again.

Edward's inner transformation is driven by a series of critical moments of recognition and emotional awakening that span the entire novel. It begins with Pellegrina's warning fairy tale — in which a loveless princess is turned into a warthog — and her whispered accusation that Edward disappoints her. Each loss strips Edward of another layer of selfishness: buried in garbage, he finally grasps why Pellegrina was disappointed in him; watching Sarah Ruth die, he admits for the first time that he truly loved someone. After losing everyone he has come to cherish, Edward shuts his heart entirely — until an antique china doll echoes Pellegrina's words and forces him to choose between hope and despair. His heart stirs, and when he opens himself to the possibility of love once more, Abilene's daughter cradles him in a doll shop and the journey comes full circle.
