The Most Fun We Ever Had follows the Sorenson family across decades, anchored by the deeply devoted marriage of Marilyn and David. Their four daughters — Wendy, Violet, Liza, and Grace — each struggle to build lives that measure up to their parents' seemingly perfect love. The central crisis of the novel is set in motion when Wendy tracks down Violet's secret teenage son, Jonah, who has spent years in foster care after his adoptive parents died. Jonah's re-entry into the family forces Violet to confront the past she buried and tests the bonds between all the Sorenson women. A sudden medical emergency brings the family to a breaking point, while old secrets and betrayals finally surface between the sisters. By the novel's end, the family moves toward healing, with Marilyn and David's enduring partnership providing the stable foundation that holds everyone together.

Beyond the headline events of the main plot, the Sorenson story is built from a web of smaller but significant moments that reveal character, deepen relationships, and quietly shift the family's direction. Marilyn's sacrifices — financial, professional, and personal — accumulate over decades and leave lasting impressions on her daughters, even as the family grows in stability and wealth. Jonah's gradual integration into the family happens through a series of uncomfortable encounters that slowly break down the walls between him and his biological relatives. Meanwhile, Liza's hidden affair ripples through the family in unexpected ways, and Grace's isolation on the West Coast keeps her from the support she desperately needs. The Sorenson daughters each navigate the gap between the lives they have and the life their parents modeled, making choices that echo their mother's more than they realize. Together, these secondary events fill in the full texture of the family's story, showing what holds people together even when they fail each other.

Beneath the surface of the Sorenson family's apparent stability runs a current of hidden pain, buried secrets, and long-delayed reckonings. Wendy's adolescent unraveling — her eating disorder, her drinking, and her overdose — shapes the family's dynamics for decades, even as nobody fully sees the sacrifices she makes for others. The discovery of David's emotional connection with a colleague creates a rare crack in Marilyn and David's marriage, one that reverberates through their daughters without ever being fully resolved. As Jonah enters the present-day story, old secrets collide: Wendy pieces together who his father really is, Jonah confesses to a damaging disclosure he made, and Violet is forced to finally acknowledge the son she has spent years refusing to claim. Grace's deception about law school isolates her until she can no longer carry it alone, and her confession begins her path home. Each of these turning points peels back a layer of the Sorenson family's carefully maintained image, revealing the love, guilt, and unspoken grief underneath.
