The Mountains Sing follows the Trần family across decades of Vietnamese history, beginning with a fateful fortune told to young Diệu Lan and tracing the violence and loss that follow her through World War II, the Great Famine, the Communist Land Reform, and the Vietnam War. Diệu Lan endures the murders of her parents, her husband's poisoning, the seizure of her homestead, and the agonizing dispersal of her six children across the countryside. Her granddaughter Hương grows up during the war's final years, raised by Diệu Lan in Hanoi after their home is bombed and destroyed, spending years awaiting her missing parents. The family is only partially reunited: Thuận dies in combat, Hoàng never returns, and the eldest son Minh resurfaces only when he is already dying. The novel closes with Hương burning a manuscript of the family's story at Diệu Lan's grave, completing a cycle of memory and love that spans nearly a century.

Beyond the headline tragedies, the Trần family's survival depends on acts of quiet bravery, communal kindness, and stubborn ingenuity. Hải saves Diệu Lan's life during the Great Famine, and Diệu Lan's resourcefulness during the Land Reform flight—placing children with strangers and pressing on alone—keeps her family alive against impossible odds. In wartime Hanoi, Hương grows up navigating social ostracism, loneliness, and the slow, painful return of her shattered family members one by one. The bonds she and Diệu Lan forge with their community—through a shared well, rebuilt walls, and deliveries of food—sustain them across years of scarcity and grief. These secondary events reveal that survival depends as much on everyday endurance, generosity, and human connection as it does on escaping catastrophe.

The Mountains Sing turns on moments of discovery, confrontation, and moral decision-making that permanently redirect its characters' lives. Diệu Lan's marriage to Hùng, Tú's warning ignored, Ngọc's bitter rupture with her mother on the road north—each choice ripples outward across decades of consequence. Back in Hanoi, revelations accumulate: Hương learns the truth of her mother's wartime trauma, Diệu Lan's black-market trade reshapes their social world, and literature slowly opens Hương's closed heart. The final act delivers the most shattering disclosures—Minh's secret life fighting for the South, Tâm's grandfather's identity as Wicked Ghost—forcing both women to test the outermost limits of their capacity for forgiveness. Each turning point reveals that how people respond to what lies beyond their control ultimately defines who they are and who they become.
