The novel opens with an adult narrator returning to Hempstock Farm, where sitting beside the pond unlocks memories of his extraordinary childhood. As a boy, he became entangled with supernatural forces after a lodger's suicide released a dangerous entity into the human world. After Lettie Hempstock tried to contain the creature in an alternate reality, the boy accidentally allowed it to enter his life through his foot, and it arrived in his home as the malicious caretaker Ursula Monkton. When the narrator refused to submit to Ursula, his father nearly drowned him, forcing him to flee to the Hempstocks for help and protection. Working together, Lettie trapped and named Ursula, summoning the hunger birds to devour her, but the birds then refused to leave while a fragment of the wormhole remained in the narrator's heart. Lettie ultimately sacrificed herself to save him from the birds, entering the pond's vast ocean to recover, and the story returns to the adult narrator who finally understands the full cost of those childhood events.

The core events that drive the story from beginning to end.

The narrator's seventh birthday party ends with no guests arriving; he receives books, records, and a kitten he names Fluffy.

The opal miner's taxi kills the narrator's kitten Fluffy on arrival, and the miner replaces it with a large, unfriendly cat named Monster.

Lettie takes the narrator to the pond, scoops out a dead fish, and removes a very old coin from its stomach.

Ginnie Hempstock reveals she already knows the full contents of the opal miner's farewell note before police have even discovered it in his pocket.

The narrator wins a lottery bond prize, and a gardener digs up a bottle of old coins from the garden that same day.

Lettie uses a forked hazel branch as a divining rod, following a trail of colored objects through the farm into the alternate reality.

A flat, furry, sharp-toothed creature Lettie calls a Manta wolf flies directly over the crouching children during their journey.

The narrator removes most of a worm from his foot using tweezers and hot water that evening, but a small piece breaks off and remains inside.

The narrator sneaks to his parents' room and dials for the Hempstocks' number, but Ursula answers the phone and scolds him.

Ursula floats twenty feet above the narrator in the storm, taunting him and threatening to have his father finish drowning him.

Old Mrs. Hempstock cuts a piece of fabric containing the father's memory of the bathtub incident, freezing both parents motionless.

Lettie arrives at the fairy ring carrying a heavy bucket of water from the pond, which the narrator steps into and falls through.

The narrator surfaces from the ocean completely dry and eats shepherd's pie while Lettie and Ginnie discuss why the hunger birds linger.

The hunger birds consume an entire tree, devour a wandering fox, and begin eating a constellation of stars from the night sky.

Ginnie drives the narrator home and tells his mother Lettie is moving to Australia; the boy finds he can barely remember what happened.

The story's secondary events trace the roots of the supernatural crisis and enrich the texture of the boy's world at Hempstock Farm. The narrator's young life is shaped early by loss, including the death of his kitten Fluffy and the peculiar circumstances surrounding the opal miner's arrival and suicide. The Hempstocks reveal their uncanny knowledge through small, telling moments—knowing the contents of a sealed farewell note, pulling an ancient coin from a dead fish—that hint at their true nature before the boy fully grasps it. When Lettie and the narrator travel into the alternate reality, they encounter wonders and dangers including the Manta wolf and the trail of colored objects Lettie uses to navigate the magical terrain. The story's crisis escalates dramatically when the hunger birds begin consuming entire trees, a wandering fox, and stars from the sky itself, until Lettie arrives at the fairy ring with the ocean carried in a bucket. By the time the boy returns home, his memories have already begun to fade, leaving him with only a vague sense that something extraordinary once happened.

Pool 3 traces the story's most pivotal revelations and turning points, beginning with the elderly woman who recognizes the adult narrator at the farmhouse door, signaling that the Hempstocks have remembered him through all the years he forgot them. The boy's growing awareness of the supernatural unfolds through small but charged moments: Lettie's cryptic non-answer about her age, Old Mrs. Hempstock's impossible knowledge of a brand-new coin, and the narrator's sudden understanding that Ursula and the tent creature are one and the same entity. Ursula's manipulation of the narrator's father drives a wedge between the boy and his family, forcing him to depend entirely on the Hempstocks for safety and truth. The confrontation at the fairy ring is the narrator's greatest act of courage, refusing his shouting father's demands and outlasting the shadows' voices, while the ocean's revelation of Lettie's true shimmering form marks his deepest encounter with what the Hempstocks really are. In the epilogue, the final revelation reshapes everything that came before: the narrator learns he was killed by the hunger birds and revived by Lettie in the pond, and understands at last that Lettie, Ginnie, and Old Mrs. Hempstock are all aspects of one eternal being.
