As Lenni's health declines, the people around her step up in ways large and small, filling Father Arthur's final chapel service and standing vigil at her bedside. The novel closes with a final revelation about Margot's lifelong love, met with unexpected compassion by the retired chaplain.

Margot Macrae's long life is a story of loss, longing, and the slow discovery of what love truly means. She married young to escape loneliness, only to lose her infant son and then her husband in the same terrible year. Her move to London introduced her to the free-spirited Meena Star, and their decades-long love story became the great unresolved question of Margot's life. After leaving London heartbroken, Margot found unexpected peace with the astronomer Humphrey James, whose gentle and accepting love helped her heal even as Meena remained in the back of her mind. Humphrey's illness and death gave Margot both grief and, paradoxically, his blessing to reunite with the woman she had always loved. The pool ends as Margot writes her farewell to Lenni in a diary, preparing to either marry the woman she has loved for decades or join the friend who changed her life forever.
