Edme's father enters the classroom to report that his son went out the previous night and never returned home.

Edme's body is pulled from the lake, and Odile runs into the forest until she reaches the border fence.

Devastated by Edme's death, Odile withdraws from the Conseil vetting program entirely.

Gendarme Odile escorts a terminally ill man named Quinton to the future valley to see his unborn granddaughter.

Quinton's granddaughter spots their masked truck, drops her plate, and waves at them, signaling she was warned in advance.

Raimond shoots Lucie Erro dead at the border fence, then swaps guns with Odile to frame her as the shooter.

Alain falsely reports a relationship with Odile to the gendarmerie, causing Jean-Savile to deny her promotion and reassign her west.

Tasked with delivering a letter beyond the border, Odile instead escapes under the fence and travels into the past.

Odile's past self spots her at the fort and calls out to soldiers, who shoot and kill future Odile.

Odile begins the novel as an uncertain teenager who stumbles into the Conseil vetting program after accidentally identifying her classmate Edme's parents as future visitors, signaling his coming death. Despite growing close to Edme, she follows the Conseil's orders and keeps his fate secret until his body is found in the lake. Grief pulls her out of the program and into the gendarmerie, where she spends nearly twenty years enforcing the border. A dying man's escorted visit to the future sets off a chain of events involving murder, false accusations, and a stolen promotion that exiles her to the western border. Trapped on the western border and watching her life narrow toward misery, she escapes into the past and sacrifices herself to save Edme. The surviving version of Odile, freed from the burden of foreknowledge, is allowed to stay in the vetting program and glimpse a more hopeful future.

The headline events of Odile's life across two timelines.

Odile writes her first essay arguing that people should endure grief rather than travel to see the dead in other valleys.

Edme and Alain chase away boys bullying Odile at lunch, and Edme walks her home from school that afternoon.

Odile and her new friends rebuild the fort behind the school together; Edme refuses to carve his initials into the wood.

Edme secretly asks Odile to deliver his audition program to the conservatory so his parents will not know about it.

The class takes a field trip to the eastern border, where Jean-Savile shows them the imposing fence and military barracks.

Edme comes to Odile's house at night and secretly plays violin while she listens on the bluffs above the lake.

Jo arrives at the beach with wine and urges everyone to swim naked; Odile watches Jo and Edme together and goes home.

Odile finds Edme's broken violin and case abandoned near the cliff's edge and buries them both in the dirt.

Odile goes to the conservatory on the day of Edme's scheduled audition and breaks down crying with the receptionist, Gilberte.

Leaving the Est 1 barracks after Quinton's visit, Odile spots a bent, decrepit woman scrubbing the floor and recognizes herself.

Raimond encourages Odile to apply for an officer promotion, and she submits an application to Jean-Savile.

Alain tells Odile he arranged for musicians to perform Edme's audition piece and have it broadcast on the radio.

Odile walks to Lucie's house and confronts her husband in the driveway, nearly drawing her gun before stopping herself.

Raimond asks Odile to live with him as his romantic partner, and she promises to think about his proposal.

Mme. Pira, during a border search on the western side, desperately asks Odile if she was the girl who saw them at the school.

The novel's secondary events trace the personal and emotional texture of Odile's life around its major turning points. From Edme's small kindnesses at school and the friends' secret fort, to Odile helping him pursue his dream of playing violin in defiance of his parents, these moments establish what she stands to lose. The beach incident and her jealousy over Edme reveal the fragility of those connections before his death shreds them entirely. In the second half of the novel, Odile's quiet attempts at self-preservation — applying for promotion, learning the truth of her future, nearly confronting Lucie's abuser — show how deeply she longs to escape a life she has sleepwalked into. A colleague's romantic proposal, a friend's devastating broadcast tribute, and a border search that brings her face to face with Edme's mother complete the picture of how grief and institutional obedience quietly hollowed out her adult years.

The secondary moments that shaped Odile's world and relationships.

Odile realizes Pichegru selected her for the vetting program not for her essay's arguments but because she identified the Piras.

Edme suggests that Odile's mother may be quietly hiding deep grief over her husband's death, surprising Odile into reconsideration.

Edme tells Odile his parents have become strangely overprotective and are now forbidding him from playing violin at home.

Odile writes a formal case-file report with Edme's initials at the top, addresses it to the Conseil, and gives it to Ivret.

Odile spots Edme's parents in a grocery store parking lot and wonders, for the first time, how she could warn him.

Ivret eliminates Jo and two others from the program; Odile realizes she now genuinely wants to become a conseillière herself.

Odile returns Edme's violin to school and refuses to speak to him for the rest of the week before his death.

Alone on New Year's Eve guard duty, Odile hears Edme's audition composition playing on the radio for the first time.

Odile figures out that her future self engineered Lucie's arrival at the border so stopping her would earn Odile a promotion.

Odile digs up Edme's long-buried decomposed violin from the cliff and keeps one of its four surviving metal tuning pegs.

Odile watches Edme fall from the cliff while playing violin, jumps into the lake, and pulls him unconscious from the water.

Mme. Ivret explains that future Odile destroyed her home valley by saving Edme, but that past Odile acted honorably and may remain in the program.

This pool tracks the pivotal discoveries and internal shifts that determine the course of Odile's life from beginning to end. Early revelations — understanding why she was truly chosen for the program, recognizing how grief quietly destroys people, and writing Edme's fate into a cold Conseil case file — reveal how knowledge becomes a cage rather than a tool. Her failure to warn Edme and her cruel withdrawal from him in his final days hardens into decades of emotional paralysis that defines her adult life. The later revelations, including hearing Edme's music on the radio, learning he loved her, and realizing her future self engineered Lucie's death to create a path to promotion, force her to finally feel the full weight of her choices. These turning points build toward her ultimate decision to defy the Conseil and save Edme, and they close with Ivret confirming that the sacrifice worked — past Odile is free to begin again.
