The Overstory weaves together the lives of strangers whose fates are shaped by their relationships with trees and the fight against deforestation. The story opens with the Hoel family's century-old chestnut tree before a family tragedy leaves Nick without direction, until Olivia's near-death experience sends her to his farm and together they join an environmental protest in California. They spend a year living atop a giant redwood called Mimas, inspiring others including Adam Appich to join the cause before a logging company forces them down. Desperate for greater impact, the group turns to arson, which ends in Olivia's death and scatters the activists. In the years that follow, the authorities close in on the survivors, Patricia Westerford makes her ultimate public sacrifice, and Adam accepts a life sentence rather than betray his beliefs.

Beneath the headline activism lie the formative events that built each character's bond with the natural world and set them on a collision course. The American chestnut blight's devastation foreshadows the deforestation to come, while Winston Ma's arrival in America plants the seeds of his daughter Mimi's environmental conscience. Characters like Douggie, Ray, Dorothy, and Patty live through quieter but equally pivotal events—war, marriage, scientific discovery, and public disgrace—that gradually pull them toward the protest movement. As the activism intensifies, Nick and Olivia find their community in California, Mimi loses her engineering career after her arrest, and Patty's vindicated research reaches the world as a bestselling book. By the story's end, Douggie has made a painful bargain with the FBI and Nick has channeled decades of grief into one monumental act of art.

Douggie's revelation about hidden logging devastation radicalizes him, while Patty's retreat from the edge of suicide opens the door to her life's most important work, and Neelay's paralysis channels his genius into virtual worlds inspired by nature. As the protest movement reaches its violent climax, Mimi is brutalized by police, the Oregon camp is demolished by machines, and Olivia's death shatters the group beyond repair. In the long aftermath, survivors remake themselves—Mimi under a false name, Ray through the slow miracle of recovery, and Patty through a final act of self-sacrifice she hopes will outlast her life.
