Through a secret tunnel in the hedge, the sisters befriend Jeffrey and bring him into their adventurous family circle. Their growing bond with him puts them on a collision course with his cold, controlling mother, Mrs. Tifton, whose plans to send Jeffrey to military school instead of music school becomes the central conflict of the summer. After a series of escalating disasters — a runaway rabbit, a ruined garden party, and a confrontation in the music room — the tension reaches a breaking point when Jeffrey decides to run away rather than submit to his mother's will.
