Tom Layward is a middle-aged father and lawyer who has spent twelve years in a loveless marriage after his wife Amy had an affair, waiting until both children left home before seeking a divorce. When he drops his daughter Miri off at Carnegie Mellon, he makes an impulsive choice to keep driving west across the country rather than return home. Along the way he visits old friends, meets up with a former girlfriend, and receives increasingly alarming invitations to represent controversial figures in the sports world. His physical health deteriorates throughout the trip as he dismisses his own symptoms, refusing to seek help despite repeated urging from those around him. After collapsing in California near his son Michael, Tom is rushed to the hospital and learns he has lymphoma. His diagnosis forces the emotional confrontation he has avoided for years, ultimately reuniting him with Amy and compelling him to accept a changed future.

The core journey from a troubled marriage to a life-changing diagnosis.

Michael is shocked the morning after Tom's arrival in California when he sees how swollen Tom's face still is and insists on knowing all his symptoms.

Before Tom even gets on the road, the family dynamics in his home reveal the depth of his marriage's dysfunction and his complicated relationships with his children. Miri's departure is preceded by arguments, a tense Cape Cod vacation, and Amy's erratic behavior at home, while Michael's visit from California surfaces concerns about Tom's health. Once on the road alone, Tom stops in Ohio, where he plays basketball, calls Amy to confess his work situation, and spends a sleepless night in a motel. His visit to Eric in South Bend is followed by a stretch on the highway where he reconstructs Amy's affair in his memory and begins to see his marriage differently. In Denver and Las Vegas, old friendships and a near-medical incident with Jill reveal how little Tom has changed, even as those around him push him to seek help. By the time he reaches California, Michael's alarm at Tom's condition sets the stage for the crisis that forces everything into the open.

The family tensions, road encounters, and side conversations that fill Tom's journey.

At Tom's father's grave in Newport Beach, Michael listens to Tom's reflections on his marriage before gently telling him he is not the right person for that conversation.

From the hospital, Michael calls Amy and Miri while Tom gets on the phone with Amy and the two apologize to each other for the first time.

Tom's road trip is driven less by external events than by the internal revelations and quiet confrontations that accumulate along the way. Long before the journey begins, the foundations of his marriage and self-image are laid bare through small, charged moments at home and on Cape Cod that expose his avoidance and his entrenched worldview. On the road, chance encounters and solitary hours of reflection force Tom to reconstruct the painful history of Amy's affair and acknowledge how much of his own stagnancy he has been projecting onto her. Visits with Eric, Brian, and Jill each surface a different dimension of his reluctance to change, as old friends and family reflect his flaws back at him. The meeting with Todd Gimmell provides the sharpest mirror of all, helping Tom see where his path is leading. By the time the medical crisis comes, Tom has already begun the slow, painful work of letting go, and his conversations at the hospital mark the emotional resolution his journey has been moving toward all along.

The realizations, confessions, and emotional turning points that define Tom's journey.
