Verloc runs an illicit shop in Soho, secretly working as a spy while living with his wife Winnie, her mother, and her brother Stevie.

Vladimir meets Verloc, mocks his laziness and past failures, and orders him to bomb the Greenwich Observatory or lose his position.

Anarchists Michaelis, Yundt, and Ossipon gather at Verloc's shop to debate revolutionary tactics while Stevie listens from a nearby room.

The Professor confesses to Ossipon that he built the Greenwich bomb at Verloc's request, and both men assume Verloc was killed in the explosion.

Chief Inspector Heat finds a scrap of fabric bearing Verloc's shop address among the bomber's body fragments recovered from Greenwich Park.

Heat tells the Assistant Commissioner that Michaelis should be arrested in connection with the Greenwich bombing.

The Assistant Commissioner presses Heat, who reluctantly reveals that Verloc has secretly been his informant for years.

The Assistant Commissioner reports the case to Home Secretary Sir Ethelred and proposes using Verloc to expose the foreign diplomat behind the attack.

Winnie's mother moves out of the Verloc home and into a charity house for destitute widows to reduce the family's financial burden.

Verloc gradually radicalizes Stevie by taking him on walks with anarchist associates, while Winnie believes a fatherly bond is forming between them.

Heat arrives at the Verloc home and shows Winnie a piece of Stevie's coat that was recovered from the Greenwich bombing scene.

Winnie listens through the parlor keyhole as Verloc confesses to Heat that Stevie was the one who carried the bomb to Greenwich.

After Heat leaves, Verloc dismisses Winnie's grief over Stevie and tries to physically force her to face him and be calm.

Winnie picks up a carving knife and stabs Verloc to death, then flees the house in terror.

Ossipon abandons Winnie at the train station, taking Verloc's money, and leaves her to travel to Europe entirely alone.

Adolf Verloc lives a double life in Soho, running an illicit shop while secretly spying for a foreign embassy, until his new handler Vladimir demands he bomb the Greenwich Observatory or lose his position. Verloc draws his anarchist associates into his scheme and secretly radicalizes his trusting brother-in-law Stevie, exploiting the bond Winnie encouraged him to form. When the bomb explodes in Greenwich Park and kills Stevie, Chief Inspector Heat traces the attack back to Verloc's home through a scrap of Stevie's coat. The Assistant Commissioner maneuvers behind the scenes, pressing Heat to expose Verloc and using him as leverage against the foreign diplomat who ordered the attack. Winnie, who only married Verloc to secure a home for her family, is shattered when she overhears Verloc's confession and realizes he used her brother as a human bomb. She kills Verloc, flees into the night, and is ultimately abandoned by Ossipon, who takes her money and leaves her alone to face a hopeless future.

The core events driving Verloc's mission, the bombing, and its deadly aftermath.

Verloc walks through the winding London streets toward the embassy, reflecting on his need to protect his own indolent, comfortable existence.

At the embassy, Privy Councilor Wurmt receives Verloc and criticizes his reports for describing potential unrest rather than real, usable events.

Stevie overhears the anarchists describe politics as cannibalistic and grows agitated, scratching obsessive circles onto paper in the adjoining room.

Winnie tells Verloc that Stevie admires him greatly and that she had to confiscate a knife from Stevie after he grew overly excited.

The Professor reveals to Ossipon that he always carries a bomb in his coat, detonated at will by squeezing a small rubber ball.

The Professor walks through London after leaving Ossipon and has a tense, contemptuous standoff with Chief Inspector Heat on the street.

Heat spends the day examining the gruesome heap of body fragments recovered by a constable from the Greenwich Park bomb scene.

The Assistant Commissioner realizes that Michaelis's wealthy female benefactor is a social acquaintance of his wife Annie, complicating the investigation.

During a cab ride to the charity home, Stevie pleads desperately with the driver to stop whipping the exhausted horse.

Verloc tells Winnie he must make an unexpected trip to Europe and departs without giving her a full explanation.

Verloc returns home after the bombing carrying a leather pouch of cash withdrawn from the bank and hints vaguely at fleeing the country.

Verloc rants to the silent Winnie about Vladimir's betrayal and insists his love for her was the only thing stopping him from attacking Vladimir.

Sitting in Stevie's favorite chair, Winnie realizes that with her brother dead she is now a free woman no longer bound to Verloc.

Winnie flees into the dark streets after stabbing Verloc and briefly considers throwing herself off a bridge into the river.

Ossipon reads a newspaper account reporting that a woman matching Winnie's description jumped overboard from a ferry to her death.

Verloc's walk to the embassy and his dressing-down by Privy Councilor Wurmt establish how precarious and joyless his secret life really is. The anarchist meeting exposes the group's deep hypocrisy, while Stevie's distress at their talk and his excited admiration for Verloc quietly foreshadow how dangerously easy it will be to manipulate him. A cab ride in which Stevie pleads with a driver to stop whipping his horse reveals his extraordinary empathy and his inability to tolerate cruelty, qualities Verloc will weaponize. After the bombing, Verloc returns home with a pouch of withdrawn cash and hints at fleeing the country, while Winnie remains deliberately detached until the truth of Stevie's death finally breaks through. Winnie's chilling realization that she is now a free woman leads to the murder, and her subsequent flight and near-suicidal despair show how completely the society she trusted has failed her. The novel closes with Ossipon reading a newspaper account of a woman's death at sea, unable to escape the knowledge of what his cowardice has caused.

Supporting moments that reveal character, motive, and the human cost of the plot.

Vladimir explains to Verloc that bombing the Greenwich Observatory will strike at science as the public's fetish and turn opinion against anarchists.

Verloc returns home from his embassy meeting in a daze and dines silently with his family, revealing nothing about Vladimir's demands.

The Professor explains his nihilistic belief to Ossipon that weak people hold back the strong and that society must be destroyed and rebuilt.

Heat, who had recently assured officials that anarchist activity in London was under control, finds himself embarrassed by the unexpected Greenwich explosion.

The Assistant Commissioner doubts Heat's push to arrest Michaelis and resolves to bypass him and take the bombing investigation into his own hands.

The Assistant Commissioner tells Sir Ethelred that the use of secret agents causes more harm than good and should not be tolerated.

The Assistant Commissioner dines alone at an Italian restaurant, viewing the other diners as denationalized, before heading to Verloc's Soho shop.

Winnie encourages Verloc to spend more time with Stevie, unknowingly setting in motion the chain of events that will lead to her brother's death.

Verloc sends Stevie to Greenwich with the Professor's bomb hidden in his coat, but Stevie trips and the device detonates, killing him instantly.

An unidentified man arrives at Verloc's shop and takes Verloc out for a private walk just before Chief Inspector Heat arrives.

Verloc tells Heat he expected Stevie to be arrested rather than killed, and blames a hyperborean swine for forcing him into the plan.

The Assistant Commissioner attends the wealthy benefactor's party and finds Vladimir there arguing that Britain must crack down harshly on anarchists.

The Assistant Commissioner confronts Vladimir on the street outside the party and threatens to expose the diplomat's role in orchestrating the Greenwich bombing.

Ossipon and Winnie return to the Verloc house before fleeing, and Ossipon discovers Verloc's dead body in the back parlor.

Ossipon meets the Professor and agonizes over the newspaper article about Winnie's death, then parts ways as each disappears into the London crowds.

Vladimir's explanation of the Observatory's symbolic value reveals that the bombing is not truly about anarchism at all but about manipulating public opinion to crush dissent, a cynical scheme that sets every tragedy in motion. The Professor's nihilistic philosophy and Heat's embarrassment after the blast show how each figure operates from self-interest rather than principle, while the Assistant Commissioner quietly maneuvers to protect his social standing under cover of justice. Winnie's well-meaning suggestion that Verloc spend more time with Stevie is the pivotal domestic moment that makes the bombing possible, as Verloc sees opportunity where his wife sees only family. The revelation that Stevie carried the bomb and died in Greenwich unfolds through a series of shocks, from an anonymous walk with an unseen official to Verloc's cold confession in the parlor. The confrontation between the Assistant Commissioner and Vladimir resolves the political plot, but the novel's true climax is the domestic one, as Winnie acts with the only sincerity in the book. Ossipon's discovery of Verloc's body and his final disappearance into the London crowd close the story on a note of moral vacancy and unresolved grief.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that turn the plot toward tragedy.
