The Secret Keeper of Main Street

In 1954, the small Oklahoma town of Mendol thrives on oil wealth, its once-dusty streets lined with boutiques and its social calendar filled with charity balls. Bailey Dowery, a young Black dressmaker at the Regal Gown on Main Street, possesses a gift of "second sight" inherited from her late mother, Samantha. When Bailey touches someone's bare skin, she receives flashes of light and color, and later, in her sleep, vivid visions of that person's true romantic desires. Her aunt Charlene, who raised Bailey after Samantha's death, taught her to interpret the symbols, but Bailey mostly sees the images directly. She wears gloves during fittings to avoid triggering her gift and resists her best friend Gabby Jones's urging to charge for readings, exhausted by the emotional toll.

Bailey's employer, Miss Jackson, depends on her for all fittings and alterations but has never offered a raise. When a newspaper announces the upcoming wedding of Elsa Grimes and Niles Porter, children of two powerful oil families, Bailey braces for trouble. Elsa, a 20-year-old who prefers dungarees to debutante gowns, has visited the shop before, desperate for Bailey to read her, but Bailey sees nothing for Elsa, an unusual blank that disturbs them both.

Elsa's mother, Ingrid, a former beauty queen, orchestrates every detail of the engagement party and wedding. She has spent years trying to mold Elsa into a proper lady, all of which Elsa has rejected. Three months earlier, Elsa arrived home drunk with Niles, and Ingrid seized the pairing to arrange a marriage uniting the Grimes and Porter fortunes. Elsa's father, Matthias Grimes, co-founded Senate Oil after purchasing abandoned wells that proved lucrative. At a diner, Elsa encounters Connor Salley, a young man from a formerly wealthy family now reduced to manual labor after his family lost their fortune settling lawsuits from a deadly refinery fire. Connor stands menacingly close, and Elsa threatens to kill him if he touches her again.

During her lunch break, Bailey meets Walter Anderson Graves, a handyman who goes by "Wag." When they shake hands, Bailey receives a burst of pink light, a positive sign, and they begin a tentative courtship. At the shop, Elsa begs for a reading, but Bailey again sees nothing. Sensing Elsa carries a deep wound, Bailey invites her home that evening. In the basement sewing space, Elsa confesses she loves someone other than Niles but will not say who. She asks Bailey to attend her engagement party on Friday, where Bailey can touch the mystery person and determine if the feeling is mutual. Elsa offers $50, and Bailey agrees.

That night, Bailey dreams of Elsa being violently attacked by a gray-eyed man. Instead of a blooming flower, she sees a bud shrivel and die. Bailey connects the vision to bruises on Elsa's neck. She calls Elsa, who identifies the attacker as Connor and agrees to meet at Queenie's diner. There, Elsa reveals the full story: At a party during a drinking game, Connor took her to a separate room and raped her while the other partygoers, including Niles and his twin brother Leo Porter, did nothing. Elsa may be pregnant. When Bailey hesitates, Elsa raises her offer to $300 for Bailey to attend the party and identify whether the person she truly loves reciprocates. Bailey agrees.

Charlene, disturbed by Elsa's visit, lies awake with memories of her own entanglement with the Grimes family. A flashback reveals that teenage Charlene worked as a maid in the Grimes household and had an affair with young Matthias. When his parents discovered the relationship, she was fired. The two later ran away to New Orleans, but Matthias wanted to return to Oklahoma, and Charlene, pregnant, refused. She gave birth to a daughter, Sageuine ("Sage"), but felt unable to raise the child alone and left her with the Broussard family, hoping Matthias would come back for them. He returned, but Charlene had already disappeared. She never told him the baby survived. Years later, Charlene came back to Mendol when her sister Samantha died, leaving 12-year-old Bailey orphaned.

Ingrid overhears Elsa's phone call with Bailey and begins investigating. A flashback reveals Ingrid took Connor as her lover in 1950. During their affair, she confided that she once caught 13-year-old Elsa kissing Rochelle Davis, the daughter of the Grimes family's housekeeper, Oda Mae, and worried about Elsa's sexuality. Connor remarked that Elsa might change if she experienced "the real thing." Ingrid tracks down Bailey's identity, visits the Regal Gown, and confronts Bailey about her reputed ability to read "heartstrings," or sense a person's true romantic attachment. Separately, Matthias visits Charlene for the first time in decades, leaving cash and asking her to keep Bailey away from Elsa.

Ingrid confronts Elsa, who confesses the rape, the pregnancy, and her refusal to marry Niles. A doctor confirms Elsa is 10 to 12 weeks pregnant. Ingrid, guilt-stricken that her remarks to Connor may have incited the attack, gives Elsa an ultimatum: Marry Niles, or the pregnancy must end. Elsa silently resolves to keep the baby. Through interleaved flashbacks, Elsa's love for Rochelle is revealed: At 13, they watched a televised royal wedding, exchanged playful vows, and shared their first kiss. Elsa has loved Rochelle ever since.

At the engagement party, Bailey arrives but is initially denied entry. A cousin of Elsa's intervenes and seats her. Rochelle delivers a note from Elsa asking Bailey to touch Rochelle's hand, but before Bailey can act, Sheriff Gale arrives and arrests Elsa for the murder of Connor Salley, whose body was found at the Red River's edge. Evidence includes an inscribed pearl necklace found near the body and witnesses to Elsa's public threats. Elsa is led away in handcuffs.

Bailey returns home shaken, insisting she should testify about her vision of Connor's attack, but Charlene forbids it, arguing no one would believe supernatural visions and that speaking up would endanger Bailey. Elsa is released on bail, and the charges are later dismissed after Ingrid secretly bribes the judge. Bailey's gift evolves: She discovers she can now see visions on command rather than only in dreams and begins charging clients for readings. Meanwhile, Charlene reveals to Matthias that their daughter Sage survived and is now a 28-year-old schoolteacher in New Orleans. Matthias, devastated by decades of secrecy, leaves without a word.

One evening, Elsa, Matthias, Walter, Bailey, and Charlene gather for dinner at the Dowery house. Ingrid arrives uninvited and, furious about Matthias's betrayal, grabs a butcher knife. Bailey lunges and seizes Ingrid's arm. Upon touching her skin, Bailey sees Ingrid and Connor as lovers and watches Ingrid shoot him. Bailey announces what she saw. After Matthias restrains Ingrid and removes her, Elsa confesses the full truth: Ingrid woke her one night, drove her to a dock where Connor was tied and drugged, and put a gun in Elsa's hand. Elsa dropped the weapon and ran. Ingrid retrieved it and shot Connor herself.

Ingrid flees to Guadalajara, Mexico, haunted by the knowledge that her careless remark to Connor set Elsa's rape in motion. Matthias buys Elsa a small house in Mendol. On April 8, 1955, Elsa gives birth to a daughter, Isabel ("Issy"), leaving Connor's name off the birth certificate. Elsa tells Rochelle she loves her, but Rochelle, accepted into a nursing residency in Oklahoma City, is not ready to live openly. They part with hope but no promises. Bailey and Walter plan to move to Oklahoma City, where Bailey will open her own dressmaking business.

Charlene announces she wants to travel to Louisiana to meet Sage. Despite fears about traveling as an interracial group through the South, Bailey, Matthias, and Elsa insist on coming. At a Texas diner, Bailey holds baby Issy's hand and sees a vision of lavender fields, laughter, and pure happiness. In New Orleans, Sage greets them warmly, and the newly formed family begins building a future together.
