A television weather forecast includes Dickens in its report, and Me weeps upon realizing that Dickens is officially back on the map.

Me stands trial at the Supreme Court for restoring slavery and segregation to his Los Angeles community of Dickens. His father F.K., a sociologist who subjected Me to harsh racial experiments, is shot and killed by police officers after a dispute at a traffic light. After F.K.'s death, Dickens disappears through gentrification, and Me rescues Hominy Jenkins from a suicide attempt, inadvertently becoming the former child actor's self-declared enslaver. Me begins restoring Dickens with signs and redrawn borders, then extends the project by placing a segregation sign on his love interest Marpessa's bus and constructing a fake whites-only school across from Chaff Middle School. The fake school drives academic improvement at Chaff but triggers a public confrontation in which rival Foy Cheshire shoots Me in the stomach. The case reaches the Supreme Court, and ultimately a television weather forecast listing Dickens signals that the city has been restored to existence.

The major plot milestones from trial to Dickens' restoration.

From the Supreme Court steps to the streets of Dickens, secondary events reveal the full texture of Me's world and the community he transforms. F.K.'s role as a community therapist and intellectual rival to Foy Cheshire sets up power dynamics that outlast his death, and Me inherits both his father's community function and his unresolved feud. After F.K. is killed, Me's awkward enslavement of Hominy is managed through a hired dominatrix and complicated by Hominy's performative racial identity. The Dum Dum Donut Intellectuals serve as both comic foil and platform, where Foy's sanitized Huckleberry Finn revision and celebrity appearances expose the think tank's slide into self-promotion. Me's romance with bus driver Marpessa Dawson develops slowly through shared bus rides and Hominy's birthday party, even as both pursue separate lives. By the novel's end, Hominy's act of quitting slavery and demanding reparations caps a series of events that quietly expose how racism, community, and performance are inseparably intertwined in Dickens.

A Black person is elected President and Foy waves an American flag, telling Me that America has finally paid its debts.

Beneath the novel's satirical surface lie a series of sharp turning points that redirect the story's course and reveal character. F.K.'s cruel childhood experiments — electric shocks, staged beatings, enforced racial pride — fail to give Me a stable racial identity but shape him into someone capable of ironic resistance. The death of F.K. becomes a pivot point as Me refuses to let it be exploited, choosing instead to bury his father and carry his legacy forward on his own terms. Small revelations accumulate — the segregated bus improves community life, Marpessa secretly preserves it as history, and a parody of the Emmett Till incident forces Me to confront the cost of his father's pedagogy. Romantic and political climaxes converge as Me and Marpessa begin an affair and Foy's narcissism peaks when he rewrites a civil rights anthem for himself and shoots Me in the street. The story's final reversals — Foy's exposure as an Our Gang child actor, Hominy's resignation from slavery, and a presidential election that divides Me and Foy — close the novel on a note of unresolved but meaningful transformation.

The key decisions, discoveries, and emotional shifts that quietly redirect the story.
