Pool 1 traces the main plot arc of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War through its most pivotal moments. It opens with Kidane seizing Hirut's Wujigra and follows the escalating conflict from Italy's invasion to Ethiopia's crumbling resistance. The war's violence against the nation and Hirut's body converge as Kidane's battlefield losses spiral into sexual assault. Ethiopia's last hope collapses when Haile Selassie flees after his offensive fails, but the resistance finds new life in the Shadow King campaign led by Hirut and Aster. The novel's climax arrives when the women are captured, turned into propaganda weapons, and finally freed during a daring assault that kills both Fucelli and Kidane. The story closes decades later when Hirut reclaims forgotten history, naming the unacknowledged soldiers before the Emperor himself.

Pool 2 illuminates the secondary characters and behind-the-scenes events that quietly determined the war's course. It begins with Hirut's girlhood weapons training and traces Aster's transformation from a household ruler to an inspiring military leader rallying women to fight. The Italian side is shown through Ettore's uneasy recruitment and growing moral crisis as he documents atrocity after atrocity. Key acts of secret resistance—the cook's sacrifice to win weapons, Fifi's double life as a spy, and the distribution of herbs to ease prisoners' deaths—reveal that much of the war's decisive action happened out of sight. The pool captures the personal cost of survival through Hirut's discovery of subtle resistance strategies and Ettore's receipt of his father's devastating letter about a life kept hidden. It closes with Haile Selassie's triumphant return set against Minim's silent erasure from history, underlining the novel's central concern with who gets remembered.

The hidden forces and supporting players who shaped the war's outcome.

Pool 3 focuses on the emotional turning points, moral revelations, and critical decisions that altered every character's trajectory. It begins with early acts of domestic abuse—Kidane's assault on Hirut and Aster's discovery of her buried necklace—that establish the novel's parallel between private and colonial violence. The pool traces how each character is transformed by events beyond their control: Aster is barred from combat, Haile Selassie grows paralyzed by guilt and obsession, and Ettore is stripped of every moral refuge one compliance at a time. Smaller but decisive moments—Hirut's act of silent resistance, Fucelli's retreat into greater cruelty after humiliation, and Haile Selassie watching the Shadow King footage in exile—reveal how private decisions shaped the public outcome of the war. The pool ends with two interlocking acts of reckoning: Hirut returning Ettore's withheld letter and walking the Emperor back toward his fate, showing that resistance also means refusing to let others escape the consequences of their choices.
