This pool traces the central spine of The Shock Doctrine, opening with the CIA's covert funding of psychiatric torture research and the deliberate training of Chilean free-market economists. It follows the violent imposition of Chicago School policies through Pinochet's coup in Chile, then tracks how those same tactics spread through Latin America, Britain, and Bolivia. The pool covers the decisive moments in Poland and Russia where newly democratic governments were forced into neoliberal structural adjustment, and the Asian financial crisis that extended the model across Southeast Asia. It then shifts to the transformation of the United States into a privatized security state after September 11, culminating in the Shock and Awe invasion of Iraq and the exploitation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The pool closes with a moment of hope as left-wing governments across Latin America roll back decades of neoliberal policy and form an alternative trade structure.

It opens with Klein's encounter with a living victim of Cameron's experiments and follows activists, journalists, and ordinary people caught in the machinery of shock doctrine policy. From CIA-backed massacres in Indonesia to an Argentine journalist killed for exposing state terror, these events reveal how ruthlessly dissent was suppressed when economic transformation was at stake. The pool tracks how shock therapy was exported into democracies through Bolivia and violently imposed through the Tiananmen massacre in China, before following South Africa's compromised post-apartheid transition. It captures the growing global resistance that peaked at the WTO protests in Seattle and the manufactured crises used to justify reforms even without a genuine emergency. The pool closes with the displacement of Sri Lanka's fishing communities after the tsunami and the death of Milton Friedman as his ideological legacy begins to face serious legal and electoral challenges.

It opens with the public disclosure of CIA torture manuals and the secret pre-coup economic blueprint in Chile, before showing how the collapse of Chile's economy and a buried torture chamber beneath a luxury mall give the lie to claims of a free-market miracle. The pool examines how institutional actors like the Ford Foundation and the ANC quietly legitimized neoliberal policies by decoupling them from the violence used to enforce them. Moving through Russia's oligarchic asset sell-off, the IMF's manipulation of economic data in Trinidad, and the self-dealing of Bush administration officials in Iraq, it exposes how insiders enriched themselves at each stage. The pool closes with the unsettling revelation that Israel's war economy has made conflict more profitable than peace, before ending on a note of grassroots hope as Thai villagers rebuild their own community and inspire organizers in New Orleans.
