Lazarus's trial testimony saves Alicia from prison and sets the stage for the novel's entire psychological drama at The Grove, where Theo first sees her as a heavily medicated shadow of herself. Early sessions expose Alicia's volatility, while Theo's personal life fractures as he discovers Kathy's affair and obsessively pursues the truth rather than confronting her. Revelations accumulate through Alicia's diary — Max's assault, Paul's secret visit — and through Theo's dangerous fieldwork, including being knocked unconscious at Lydia's home and learning the devastating words Vernon once spoke to Alicia. The moment Theo offers Alicia a private painting space and she smiles, and the later moment she finally speaks, mark the story's two great emotional turning points. The novel's central twist then reframes everything: Theo was the stalker, Gabriel was Kathy's lover, and Alicia identified Theo almost from the beginning. Alicia's final diary entry strips away Theo's self-deception, revealing how Gabriel's cowardice and Theo's manipulation together triggered the murder.
