The Silver Ladies of Penny Lane

Tess Templar is a 62-year-old dressmaker living in Milbury, England. She runs Curvaceous, a boutique specializing in made-to-measure outfits for larger women, with her best friend and business partner, Orla Regan. When Tess weighs herself one January morning and discovers she is fourteen stone (196 pounds), she confronts how much she has let herself go. Her ex-husband Gerry left her years ago for Ursula, a younger woman from his advertising agency, beginning the affair while Tess was recovering from a hysterectomy. After the divorce, Tess found love with David, but he died of a heart attack while driving nearly three years ago. Since his death, Tess has gained weight through comfort eating and lost her remaining confidence during treatment for breast cancer.

Her daughter Amber, a make-up artist, is marrying her fiancé Peter at the end of July. Tess dreads attending the wedding overweight and alone, particularly beside the slim Ursula. Her four-year-old granddaughter Ellie, the daughter of Tess's son Matt and his wife Lisa, innocently reinforces Tess's insecurity by saying she loves her nana because "there's lots of you." Tess resolves to lose weight and find a companion for the day. She and Orla join Slim Chance, a weekly slimming club, where Tess befriends Shirley, a widow and fellow breast cancer survivor. Tess begins losing weight through dieting and daily walks.

Orla discovers an online dating agency called Meetings for the More Mature (MMM) and persuades Tess to pay £150 for the premium Hearts Club tier, which promises six introductions to vetted candidates and a refund if no match is found. The membership includes a discounted singles' cruise. Tess's first date, Benedict, takes her to an expensive Italian restaurant and then to visit his elderly mother in Kensington, introducing Tess as his partner. Afterward, Benedict's French boyfriend arrives and embraces him. Tess realizes she was used to convince the mother that Benedict was in a heterosexual relationship, apparently to satisfy conditions in the will.

At a wedding planning meeting, Gerry asks if Tess is bringing someone, and she impulsively says yes. Amber asks Tess to make her wedding dress, a slim design copied from an expensive Harrods gown. The subsequent MMM dates prove uniformly disastrous: A solicitor named James arrives on a Harley-Davidson and makes crude remarks; William, described as head of a "catering empire," turns out to run a single burger van; and Andy Barrymore, a charming hotel owner, plies Tess with cocktails until she is severely intoxicated. She wakes up naked beside Andy with no memory of the night and overhears staff discussing how many women he brings to his room each week. She slips out in shame and later discovers Orla had the same encounter through MMM. Walter "Wally" Watson, a fitness-obsessed vegan, proves another romantic dead end but coaches Tess in jogging, setting her on a path to regular exercise that produces visible results alongside her dieting.

Tess and Orla board the cruise ship White Rose for the MMM singles' cruise. In Athens, they meet Alan, a furniture maker, and his quiet friend Barry, who surprises everyone with encyclopedic knowledge of ancient history but is visibly unwell. On board, Tess meets Sanjeev, a handsome oncologist from the Royal Marsden hospital, and Ed, a photographer from Newcastle who has a prosthetic leg. Over stops at Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, and Crete, Barry serves as an impromptu guide at historical sites. On a beach in Rhodes, the group's losses come into the open: Ed removes his prosthetic leg, Barry's surgical scars are visible, and Tess shares her history of hysterectomy and breast cancer. Barry quietly tells Tess his cancer has spread everywhere and can no longer be treated.

On the final evening, Tess wears a white shift dress she bought years ago with David in Italy; it fits beautifully thanks to her weight loss. She and Sanjeev dine together and exchange phone numbers. Their evening is cut short when Barry collapses. Sanjeev examines him, summons the ship's doctor, and they stabilize Barry with medication.

Back in Milbury, Tess continues losing weight and is astonished to fit into a size-twelve emerald green dress at Selfridges, which she buys for the wedding. Her most promising MMM date is Dougie Morrison, a charming Scottish camping equipment salesman who takes her glamping in a luxury tent near Woodstock in the Cotswolds. They visit Blenheim Palace, dance barefoot on the grass, and spend the night together. The next morning, Dougie has a heart attack. At the hospital, a nurse tells Tess that Dougie's wife has been contacted; she believed he was at a sales conference. Tess leaves in shock.

Her final date, George, is a dull farmer who talks endlessly about cattle and dismisses Tess's dressmaking as not real work. Having met all six candidates without success, Tess writes a detailed complaint to MMM demanding her £150 refund, noting that at least three men were inadequately vetted.

Sanjeev re-enters Tess's life. Over a series of meetings, he shares the sad news that Barry has died and casually offers to escort Tess to the wedding. Orla questions whether Tess is truly in love or merely attracted to Sanjeev's looks and profession; Tess privately acknowledges her uncertainty. She buys a wide-brimmed emerald and turquoise hat and a matching bag to complete her wedding outfit. MMM initially refuses the refund, but after Tess threatens to contact the national press, they credit £150 to her account.

The night before the wedding, Sanjeev phones to say his five-year-old granddaughter has broken her arm and is calling for him. He cannot attend. Tess is devastated but recognizes that his family and work will always come first. She accepts he is a good man but not the right partner for her, and resolves to attend alone.

On the morning of the wedding, Matt reveals that Ursula has moved out, leaving Gerry on his own. Tess and Gerry are seated together at the top table. Amber is radiant in the dress Tess made, and Ellie delights everyone as the flower girl. Tess looks striking in her emerald dress, hat, and new figure. Gerry is attentive and nostalgic, but Tess feels nothing for him beyond his role as the father of her children. During the speeches, Simon Sparrow, a tall, grey-haired actor with a deep, expressive voice, reads Lord Byron's "All for Love." Tess is instantly mesmerized. Joshua Matthew Templar is born at the venue, adding joyful chaos to the celebrations.

On Tuesday, Simon arrives with red roses. They spend a wonderful evening together, and Tess tells Orla she is certain she loves him and intends to marry him. The MMM refund email arrives the same day. When Orla suggests celebrating at Boulters, the restaurant that once fueled Tess's weight gain, Tess agrees with a condition: just one helping.
