Bhima wakes in the slum at dawn, aware that her granddaughter Maya is pregnant and has dropped out of college.

Bhima arrives late at Sera's apartment, and Sera suspects from Bhima's expression that her mission to find the father has failed.

Bhima tells Sera she confronted Maya's named classmate Ashok Malhotra at the college cafeteria and realized Maya had lied about him.

Bhima beats Maya for lying about Ashok, and Maya insists she had no choice but to protect the real father's identity.

Maya agrees to an abortion only on the condition that Sera personally accompanies her to the clinic.

Viraf secures a doctor recommendation from a friend and presses for Maya's abortion to be arranged as quickly as possible.

Sera accompanies Bhima and Maya to the abortion clinic and waits outside while the procedure is performed.

Maya tells Sera coldly that everyone will be satisfied now because her baby is dead.

Months after the abortion, Bhima takes the withdrawn and silent Maya to the Bombay seaside for chaat to lift her spirits.

The Dubash family runs into Bhima and Maya at a seaside chaat stall, and Bhima notices Viraf behaving flustered and guilty.

Bhima confronts Maya, who finally reveals that Viraf arrived at Banu's house one evening, assaulted her, and then blamed her for tempting him.

Bhima attempts to confront Viraf alone during their Saturday drive to the market but breaks down sobbing instead.

Viraf accuses Bhima of stealing 700 rupees from Banu's cupboard in front of Sera.

Bhima inadvertently reveals Viraf's assault on Maya while defending herself, and Sera immediately dismisses her and bans her from the household.

Bhima releases balloons over the Bombay sea, imagines the Afghan balloon seller's comforting voice, and resolves to live for Maya.

The novel's present-day story follows Bhima as she tries to help her pregnant granddaughter Maya while working for wealthy Parsi employer Sera Dubash. After Maya refuses to name the real father and lies about a college classmate, Bhima and Sera agree that an abortion is the only way forward. Maya undergoes the procedure in a cold, bitter silence that hints at a deeper wound she has not revealed. Months later, a chance encounter at the seaside forces Bhima to recognize that Sera's son-in-law Viraf is the real father. Bhima's attempt to hold Viraf accountable ends in catastrophe when she inadvertently exposes the truth in front of Sera, who fires Bhima on the spot. The novel closes with Bhima finding unexpected freedom at the Bombay seaside, resolving to face an uncertain future for Maya's sake.

The mystery father, Maya's abortion, and Bhima's dismissal

Gopal woos Bhima at her bus stop, cycling alongside her moving bus and serenading her with Hindi film songs each day.

Sera moves into the Dubash household after marrying Feroz and quickly discovers her mother-in-law Banu is cruel and domineering.

Banu slaps Sera in the kitchen for entering while unwashed during her period, then denies the assault when confronted.

Freddy reveals to Sera that Feroz's previous fiancée, Gulnaz, broke off their engagement after experiencing his violent temper.

Maya briefly works as a caretaker at Banu's house to cover a gap between nurses, then suddenly and unexpectedly stops coming.

A telegram from Delhi arrives telling Bhima that her daughter Pooja and son-in-law Raju are seriously ill.

A Muslim stranger named Hyder helps a stunned Bhima understand that Raju and Pooja are dying of AIDS.

Raju dies and is cremated on a funeral pyre, with Bhima staying alive only for the sake of Maya.

Pooja has a final lucid day, gives Bhima instructions about her savings, asks her to explain her absence to Maya, and dies that evening.

Dinaz notices Sera has become reclusive and is forgetting to eat after Feroz's death, and suggests she and Viraf move in.

Bhima tells Maya the story of Gopal's factory accident at the seaside, framing it as a lesson about life without education.

The factory accountant Devdas reveals to a recovering Gopal the contract he tricked Bhima into signing, limiting compensation to 1,000 rupees.

Gopal's alcohol addiction worsens, he loses a second job, and the family is forced to leave their chawl apartment for a slum.

Bhima publicly beats Gopal at the bootlegger's den for abandoning their sick son Amit; Gopal retaliates by striking Bhima.

Viraf arrives uninvited at Banu's house in the early evening, pressures Maya into a sexual encounter, and tells her she is to blame for tempting him.

This pool traces the key backstory events that shaped Bhima and Sera's lives long before the novel's present-day action begins. Bhima's love story with Gopal curdles after a factory accident robs him of his livelihood, leading to alcoholism, domestic violence, and his eventual abandonment of the family. Sera's marriage to Feroz is poisoned from the start by the cruelty of his mother Banu and by Feroz's own inherited violent temper. Tragedy strikes Bhima again when her daughter Pooja and son-in-law Raju both die of AIDS in Delhi, leaving Bhima to raise their young daughter Maya alone. The pool also captures key present-day secondary scenes, including Maya's temporary work at Banu's house and Dinaz and Viraf moving in with Sera. Together, these events reveal the cycles of exploitation, grief, and resilience that have quietly defined both women's lives before the novel's central crisis erupts.

The backstories of abuse, loss, and survival that shaped Bhima and Sera

Sera and Bhima share tea with Bhima crouched on the floor using a separate steel cup, quietly exposing the class divide beneath their closeness.

Sera recognizes the young Maya's intelligence during an early visit to the slum and decides to personally take responsibility for her education.

Sera visits the paralyzed, sleeping Banu and secretly pinches her cheek hard as her only private act of revenge against years of cruelty.

Bhima's neighbor hints that he knows Maya is pregnant, and Bhima buys his silence with sugar, realizing their secret is spreading.

Feroz strikes Sera with a brass candleholder and leaves on a business trip the next day without offering any apology.

Bhima massages Sera's bruised and injured body after the candleholder attack and urges her not to tolerate Feroz's violence.

Bhima brings seven-year-old orphaned Maya back from Delhi to live with her in Bombay after Pooja and Raju die.

Sera attends Aban's engagement party and privately relives the night Feroz first punched her, only three months into their marriage.

Sera takes young Dinaz and leaves the Dubash household for her own parents' home after four years of enduring Feroz's abuse.

Freddy visits Sera at her parents' home, buys the couple a second separate apartment, and persuades her to return to Feroz.

Gopal disappears, leaving Bhima a letter blaming her for emasculating him and taking their son Amit back to his village.

Maya reads Gopal's farewell letter aloud to Bhima at the slum, forcing both women to confront the old wound of his abandonment.

After hearing Maya's full account of Viraf's assault, Bhima is overwhelmed by hatred for every man who has exploited her family.

After the failed car confrontation, Bhima coldly addresses Viraf as "Viraf Seth" instead of her usual affectionate "baba," and he flinches.

Walking away from the Dubash apartment for the last time, Bhima realizes she only ever knew Sera through habits and routines, not her inner self.

This pool focuses on the intimate turning points and discoveries that illuminate the novel's deeper emotional truths. Early scenes expose the contradictions in Sera and Bhima's relationship — sharing tea while separated by utensils and floor space — alongside Sera's secret cruelty toward the paralyzed Banu and her quiet decision to sponsor Maya's future. Flashbacks reveal the full extent of Feroz's physical abuse, Bhima's loyal nursing of Sera's injuries, and Gopal's silent abandonment of his family through a devastating farewell letter. Key social scenes, including a neighbor's pointed gossip and Sera's private reliving of her first beating at Aban's party, show how shame and class operate in both women's worlds. After learning the truth about Viraf, Bhima experiences a surge of hatred and clarity that permanently transforms her posture toward her employers. The pool ends with Bhima walking away from decades of service and recognizing, for the first time, the true limits of what she and Sera ever shared.
