His slow, complicated feelings for Amelia unfold through missed meetings, confessions over drinks, and a disastrous author reading he arranged purely to impress her. Meanwhile, the women in A.J.'s orbit — Ismay, Amelia, and Maya herself — each navigate loss, identity, and survival in ways that quietly mirror his own journey. A teenage Maya earns literary recognition for a story that confronts the truth of her origins, while Ismay and Lambiase find unexpected solace in each other. These secondary events give the novel its texture and prove that no life on the island is truly separate from any other.
