Before Clara ever boards a ship to London, her life in Bluffton is defined by old wounds and recent losses — the house fire that scarred her as a child, the divorce that cost her her savings, and decades of searching for any trace of her missing mother. Her best friend Lilia's encouragement and her own stubborn determination push her to take the trip despite Nat's objections. Once abroad, secondary characters like Moira, Dr. Finlay, Eliza Walker, and the theater director Louisa Mayfair steadily pull back the curtain on Bronwyn's hidden life in England. Small discoveries — a garden sign bearing an invented word, an acrostic hidden in a surviving page — build toward the larger revelation that Bronwyn is alive nearby. The pool closes at the novel's very end, when Wynnie, Clara, and Bronwyn ceremonially burn the original sequel and scatter its ashes, releasing the last hold of the past.
