The story opens when the survivors of the sunken luxury yacht Galaxy pull a mysterious stranger from the ocean, and he immediately claims to be the Lord. Police inspector LeFleur, living on a Caribbean island, discovers the life raft that carried the survivors and secretly takes their diary home to read. One by one the castaways perish at sea from injury, shark attacks, and the violence of the ocean, as the stranger refuses to simply rescue them. Benji's diary reveals that his friend Dobby had planned to destroy the yacht, while aboard the raft the unraveling Lambert grows increasingly dangerous to those around him. In the chaos of Lambert's final breakdown, Geri is killed by sharks and Lambert drowns, leaving only Benji and the little girl Alice — who at last speaks, revealing she is the Lord. The story resolves when LeFleur tracks down the drifter who originally reported the raft and discovers it was Benji, who had left the diary there on purpose as a gift of hope.

The core survival story and the discovery that followed.

Reporter Valerie Cortez broadcasts live from the luxury yacht Galaxy moments before the feed cuts unexpectedly to static.

The lifeboat survivors introduce themselves to each other; Lambert shows open contempt for the working crew members among them.

A storm threatening to swamp the lifeboat vanishes almost instantly after the stranger places his hand over his face.

The coast guard officially calls off the search for the Galaxy and memorial services begin for the missing passengers.

Yannis leads the surviving castaways in a late-night sing-along aboard the cramped lifeboat.

LeFleur reads the diary's inside cover and finds a dedication to a woman named Annabelle and a plea for forgiveness of sins.

The stranger comforts the grieving castaways after Mrs. Laghari's death by telling them she is now in a better place.

Nevin asks Benji to write a farewell note to his children, telling them he is sorry for not being a better father.

A rainstorm arrives and replenishes the castaways' water supply, then stops abruptly; Benji shouts at the stranger to bring it back.

LeFleur finally tells his wife Patrice that he found a diary inside the washed-up life raft.

The group catches a seagull that lands in the boat; Benji breaks down sobbing after it is killed for food.

Geri dives beneath the raft to patch a hole and discovers barnacles on the hull attracting both fish and sharks.

The surviving castaways witness the surrounding ocean glowing brilliantly with bioluminescent plankton during the night.

Lambert's former investment firm publicly announces it will fund a sea search mission to locate the sunken Galaxy.

Dobby returns to the island months later and is reunited with his cousin Benji, who survived the voyage.

Before the Galaxy sank, a reporter captured footage of the glittering gathering of the wealthy and powerful aboard the yacht — the last image the world saw before disaster struck and the broadcast went dead. On the lifeboat, the survivors navigated not only the sea but their own social tensions, with Lambert's open contempt for the working crew revealing much about his character. Small moments punctuated the horror of the voyage and revealed the castaways' humanity — a late-night sing-along, a seagull caught and killed, a sea glowing with plankton in the dark. On land, LeFleur slowly drew his wife Patrice into the secret of the diary while the pressure of the investigation mounted around him. The announcement of a professional search mission to find the Galaxy's wreck added a new urgency to both storylines, as the truth of the sinking crept closer to the surface. The novel closes on a note of quiet restoration, with Dobby returning to the island and being reunited with a cousin he had feared was lost forever.

The supporting moments that shaped survival, grief, and discovery.

The stranger tells the castaways he can only save them when every single person on the boat believes in him.

Lambert furiously confronts the stranger, demanding to know how he boarded the Galaxy and what caused the yacht to sink.

The stranger tells the skeptical Yannis that for all science can explain, it still cannot explain human beings themselves.

LeFleur's backstory is revealed: his four-year-old daughter Lilly drowned at the beach, a tragedy that shattered his faith.

Benji recounts how he and Geri pulled scattered survivors into the lifeboat from the wreck, including a small girl named Alice.

Nina pleads with the stranger to save the group; he responds that their worry is itself a sign of lacking faith.

Benji confronts the stranger about why he did not stop Jean Philippe from taking his own life and disappearing overboard.

Lambert fires a flare gun at a plane passing far too high overhead; the other survivors wrestle the gun away from him.

Dobby approaches LeFleur outside a bar and introduces himself as the cousin of a man who was aboard the Galaxy.

LeFleur takes Dobby to an abandoned church and reads Benji's diary entries aloud to confront him about the sinking.

Dobby reveals that Benji believed Jason Lambert was his long-lost father and had spent years nursing a desire for revenge.

Dobby reveals that Annabelle is dead and explains that Benji's distorted memories were caused by a trauma-induced confabulation disorder.

Alice hands Benji an explosive mine and instructs him to roll overboard into the sea.

Alice reveals to Benji that a pod of whales, not deliberate sabotage, was what actually caused the Galaxy to sink.

Dobby tells LeFleur that the name 'Rum Rosh' is a Hebrew phrase meaning 'God lifted my head.'

The central tension of the story is established immediately when the stranger declares that salvation is conditional on total belief — a challenge none of the survivors initially accepts. LeFleur's personal tragedy, the drowning death of his young daughter, explains why reading the diary affects him so profoundly, as he sees his own grief mirrored in the story at sea. As the voyage continues, hard truths emerge: Benji's failure to stop a sabotage plot, Jean Philippe's chosen disappearance, and the stranger's provocative refusal to simply intervene when lives hang in the balance. When Dobby arrives on the island and is confronted by LeFleur, the true psychological story of Benji's trauma is finally laid bare — including the shattering revelation that Annabelle is dead and that Benji's memories of the disaster were distorted by grief. Alice's final disclosures to Benji — the truth about what really sank the Galaxy and the mine that dissolves from his hands — complete his spiritual transformation. The discovery that the name Rum Rosh means 'God lifted my head' confirms the novel's quiet conviction that faith and grace can reach even the most broken of souls.
