Grandmother serves as Sophia's primary caregiver and guide, even as her own health slowly declines. Father remains a more distant figure, though he and Sophia edge closer together by the end of summer. The book closes with an ambiguous and tender final image of Grandmother alone in the night, suggesting she senses the approach of her own death.

While the main plot traces the emotional arc of loss and healing, the novel is equally built from smaller, vivid scenes that reveal character and deepen theme. These vignettes introduce the island's cast of visitors and neighbours, capture the textures of daily island life, and show Sophia and Grandmother navigating the world beyond their private bond. Scenes involving Father's landscaping obsession, the mysterious Eriksson, and the uninvited yacht guests show how the outside world occasionally intrudes on the family's summer. Sophia's growing independence is visible in moments like her solo night in the tent, while Grandmother's resilience appears in how she handles everything from trespassing to a crashed bulldozer. Beneath the episodic surface of the novel lies a series of charged moments in which characters reveal themselves, make meaningful choices, or shift emotionally in ways that quietly change everything. From Sophia's first question about death to Grandmother's final act of refusing the chamber pot, these turning points map the inner life of the book. Many of them show Grandmother protecting Sophia from grief through small deceptions, inventive play, or patient kindness. Others reveal Grandmother's own inner world — her memories of the Scouts, her solidarity with the equally oppressed Verner, and her deep awareness that her time is running out. Sophia, meanwhile, moves through guilt, fear, anger, and tenderness, edging closer with each vignette to a more mature sense of empathy. The pool ends with a quietly hopeful image of Sophia and Father drawing closer, observed from the other side of a wall by Grandmother.
