Part 25: “Wakeup”

Chapter 68 Summary: “The Ardua Hall Holograph”

Aunt Lydia reports that Aunt Vidala has regained consciousness, though she has not yet spoken. Heel marks suggest an assailant dragged Aunt Vidala. Now, it is rumored that her stroke was the result of an attack. Aunt Vidala moves to a recovery ward, where the other founding Aunts are always at her bedside.

The elopement note has also come under scrutiny, though Aunt Lydia tries to discourage searches for the imaginary couple, but Aunt Elizabeth insists, so Aunt Lydia must go through the motions of sending out a search team of Angels. The team comes up empty.

Commander Judd calls Aunt Lydia into his office, furious that she’s lost Baby Nicole. He worries that the Council will discover that Baby Nicole was in Gilead and he let her get away. Aunt Lydia assures him that only the two of them, and Nicole herself, know her identity. She tells Commander Judd that either Nicole has truly run away, or someone abducted her, and in either case the guilty party is associated with Mayday and will be flushed out.

Angels find two Pearl Girl backpacks near a trail in Vermont, which provides a red herring distraction for Nicole and Agnes. Nothing comes of the search. The cause of the water shortage turns out to be Aunt Immortelle’s body blocking the outlet in the cistern. Aunt Lydia reminds herself that this was a willing sacrifice. New rumors surface that Jade murdered Aunt Immortelle. Aunt Elizabeth bemoans the scandal, saying it will reflect badly on the Aunts and Aunt Lydia says they will act as though Aunt Immortelle fell in while investigating the cistern.

More speculation arises. Reports surface that two Pearl Girls passed through the gate with proper papers, suggesting that Aunt Victoria was complicit in a double escape and that the elopement letter had been part of the plot to delay pursuit. Next comes news that witnesses saw two Pearl Girls in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Commander Judd search party has orders to shoot to kill, as he insists that a dead Baby Nicole is better than none. He thinks Nicole must have been a plant, and Aunt Lydia apologizes, as she had believed Nicole to be a genuine convert, which would have been a tremendous coup. As long as she is alive, someone could use Nicole to destroy Commander Judd, and Aunt Lydia.

Aunt Lydia goes to visit Aunt Vidala again, sending Aunt Elizabeth for a cup of tea. She commands Aunt Vidala to wake up. Her eyes open and she says in a clear voice: “You did this, Lydia. You’ll hang for it” (391). Aunt Lydia tells Aunt Vidala to go back to sleep and she closes her eyes. Aunt Elizabeth returns as Aunt Lydia is looking for the vial of morphine in her pocket. Aunt Lydia tells Aunt Elizabeth that Aunt Vidala spoke, though she must have brain damage because she said that Aunt Elizabeth had struck her and was the Mayday traitor. She suggests that some Commanders might still resent Aunt Elizabeth’s role in Dr. Grove’s demise and may accept Aunt Vidala’s testimony against her. Aunt Elizabeth is distraught, so Aunt Lydia comforts her and pointedly mentions Aunt Vidala’s allergies, then mentions Aunt Vidala’s pillow needs straightening before leaving the room.

Part 25 Analysis

Time is running out for Aunt Lydia, as more revelations emerge about Agnes, Nicole, and Becka. Still Aunt Lydia struggles mightily to keep the plan concealed.

Aunt Lydia must contend with Commander Judd, who had been counting on using Baby Nicole as a tool to prop up his career, as well as a fresh young bride. Commander Judd makes veiled threats that the reputation of the Eyes as well as the Aunts would suffer should anyone find out that Baby Nicole was in Gilead. Aunt Lydia leaves Commander Judd with assurances that she will discover those working with Nicole.

Becka drowns while hiding in the water cistern, which had been the cause of the water shortage. Aunt Lydia notes: “The frugal child had removed her outer clothing so as to save it for someone else’s future use […] She’d retained her undergarments for purposes of modesty” (389). While this saddens Aunt Lydia, it becomes clear that Becka has always been a pawn in the plan. Aunt Lydia sees Becka’s death as a necessity, a sacrifice for the greater good. That Becka has saved her clothes for a future Aunt implies that she, like Agnes, believes they are fighting for a “better Gilead,” rather than a collapse of Gilead. Aunt Lydia knows that the indoctrination Becka and Agnes underwent is so thorough that they may not have participated had she related its end results as the destruction of Gilead. She has manipulated them as she does everyone else.

Becka got the idea to conceal herself in the water cistern from the story she related to Agnes about Aunt Lily, who committed suicide by drowning herself in a similar manner. Becka had told Agnes that she would drain the water first, but she did not intend to do this, as she knew that a complete lack of water in the dormitories would lead to her immediate exposure. Aunt Lydia calls Becka’s death a willing sacrifice. Becka sacrificed herself for Agnes, who she loved like a sister.

Commander Judd orders his men to shoot to kill as they search for the “imposter” Pearl Girls, and he will not allow Aunt Lydia to deter him. If someone finds Baby Nicole, she could destroy them both. He states that should that happen, it would be the end of her reign at Ardua Hall, as well as her life. Aunt Lydia wants Commander Judd to know that he may have control over her position, but it is mutual. Their days of courteously working together for their mutual benefit, while despising each other, are over.

When she’s unable to dispatch Aunt Vidala, Aunt Lydia convinces Aunt Elizabeth that Aunt Vidala means to denounce her. Aunt Lydia makes it seem as though Aunt Elizabeth has no choice but to take the pillow and snuff the remaining life out of Aunt Vidala. This works well for Aunt Lydia’s plans. Aunt Vidala’s sudden death will focus immediate attention away from the disappearance of Agnes and Jade. Aunt Lydia hopes it will be enough. Here, we see that all the elements of Aunt Lydia’s plan are coming together, but each is precarious.
