Detective Michael Teller and the ghost of his daughter Beth arrive in a remote Australian town to investigate a children's home fire.

Beth and Michael inspect the burned ruins of the children's home and discover the director and nurse are both missing.

Beth and Michael visit the local hospital and meet Isobel Catching, an Aboriginal teenager who claims to have witnessed the fire.

Catching begins telling her story in verse, describing how a road trip with her mother ended in a deadly flash flood.

Catching regains consciousness alone in a strange gray world with two suns, where her mother's body has vanished.

Winged creatures called Fetchers capture Catching, heal her injuries, and carry her underground, planning to hand her to their master.

Michael learns that the man found dead after the fire was stabbed to death, not killed by the fire itself.

Police chief Derek Bell grows visibly nervous when Michael plans to interview wealthy philanthropist Alexander Sholt and insists on sending Officer Hartley along.

Officer Hartley receives a call that the bodies of Cavanagh and Flint have been found stabbed to death in an inaccessible storm drain.

The Feed, a monstrous white creature, plunges his hands into Catching's body and devours the colors living inside her as she watches helplessly.

Beth and Michael discover that Derek Bell has been stabbed to death inside his home.

Catching concludes her story: she and Crow attack the Fetchers, confront the Feed, free caged birds, and Crow dances until the world explodes.

Michael and Officer Hartley locate and descend into the hidden underground bunker beneath the ruins of the children's home.

Waiting alone outside the bunker, Beth suddenly understands that Catching's entire story was allegorical and identifies the real people behind the Fetchers and Feeds.

Beth and Michael share a final farewell conversation, and Beth manages to physically hug her father before she fades away.

Detective Michael Teller and the ghost of his daughter Beth arrive in a remote Australian town to investigate a mysterious fire at a children's home. After visiting the ruins, they meet a young Aboriginal woman named Isobel Catching at the local hospital, who begins telling them an extraordinary story about monsters, an underground place, and a creature that devours colors. As more stabbed bodies surface and the police chief himself is found dead, the case grows increasingly dangerous and strange. Michael and Officer Hartley eventually discover a hidden underground bunker beneath the children's home ruins, and Beth finally understands the awful truth concealed within Catching's allegorical story. With the mystery solved and her father beginning to heal, Beth says a final farewell and joins Catching and Crow as they rise together into the afterlife.

The main investigation: fire, murder, and a ghost detective duo.

Beth notices an unusually large crow watching her near the children's home ruins and senses it might actually be able to see her.

Michael shows Beth a photograph of the children's home and identifies the director Tom Cavanagh and the nurse Martin Flint.

Catching surprises Beth by looking directly at her and speaking to her, revealing that she can see the ghost.

Catching tells Beth that she is stuck between worlds and urges her to move on to the next stage of existence.

Beth suddenly recalls that just after dying she glimpsed brilliant colors, but turned back when she heard her grieving father cry.

Officer Hartley tells Michael about her childhood friend Sarah Blue, an Aboriginal girl who disappeared as a teenager and was never found.

Beth searches the Sholt house and discovers a broken upper-floor window with black hairs caught in the frame.

A neighbor tells police she heard wings beating in the night air near where Cavanagh and Flint's bodies were found.

Catching tells Beth that no one is pursuing her and that she is sharing her story simply because she wants to be heard.

Catching describes waking in the underground room and meeting a completely gray girl called Crow, who warns her about the Feed.

Crow tells Catching that the Feed will eat the colors living inside her and that many other girls have already met this fate.

Beth walks away from Michael and deliberately leaves him behind after he refuses to attend her grandfather's birthday party.

A sea of bright colors appears before Beth and she senses her mother is among them, but forces herself to turn away.

Michael breaks down and confesses that he has kept away from the family because he blames himself for failing to protect Beth.

Catching appears near the children's home with a crow perched on her shoulder after Michael and Hartley emerge from the bunker.

While Michael investigates the fire, subtle clues quietly accumulate: a crow that seems to watch Beth near the ruins, a missing Aboriginal girl from the past, and a broken window with black hairs at the Sholt house. Beth's world shifts when Catching reveals she can see her, urges her to move on, and triggers Beth's first conscious memory of the beautiful afterlife she once turned away from. As the investigation stalls and more bodies emerge, Beth struggles between her duty to her grieving father and her growing awareness that she no longer belongs in the living world. After walking away from Michael in frustration and nearly surrendering to the pull of glowing afterlife colors, she returns to find him finally confessing the guilt that has kept him isolated. The stage is set for a resolution that will free both Beth and the victims whose stories have gone untold for too long.

Hidden clues, ghostly connections, and Beth's growing need to move on.

Michael agrees to Beth's suggestion that they interview the young woman found near the fire, setting their investigation in a new direction.

Catching warns Michael that her story involves monsters and other-places before she begins telling it.

Beth's fury at Catching's insinuations causes a ceiling light to explode, the first time she has physically affected the world since dying.

Michael discovers that Cavanagh and Flint had unexpectedly large bank accounts built up by years of regular cash deposits.

After the Feed's first attack, Catching notices a permanent gray patch has appeared on her arm that she cannot restore to color.

Catching forces herself to recite the names of her matrilineal ancestors, drawing on their strength, and resolves to make the Feed feel fear.

Catching realizes there are two Feeds when a second attacker arrives with brown stone eyes instead of the first one's mirrored eyes.

In a dream, the dead girls captured before Catching tell her that every feeling has an opposite and can be named and fought.

Crow saves Catching from slipping into near-death, even though Crow has urged Catching all along to simply accept dying.

Crow's hair begins turning black again as she absorbs Catching's courage and hope, signaling the unexpected return of her own colors.

Catching systematically names each negative emotion trapped inside her and counters it with its opposite until her grayness fades away.

Beth explains to Michael that Catching did not kill the four men and that the real killer was the ghost of Sarah Blue.

Beth tells Michael that Catching has inherited the power to act as a conduit between the living world and the spirit world.

Michael calls Aunty Viv and accepts the invitation to Grandpa Jim's birthday party, his first step toward rejoining the family.

Beth, Catching, and Crow run together and each transforms into her signature color as they rise into a joyful swirl of colors.

From the moment Michael agrees to interview Catching to the final revelation that a ghost carried out justice against four men, this pool traces the story's most pivotal decisions and discoveries. Catching's allegorical account reveals crucial details: two attackers instead of one, a process of spiritual destruction, and a long-dead girl named Crow who chose to resist rather than surrender. Catching and Crow's intertwined recovery, built on ancestral strength and the understanding that every dark feeling has an opposite, drives the plot toward its climax. When Beth finally names Sarah Blue as the true killer and explains Catching's nature as a conduit between worlds, Michael must accept both the reality of the abuse and the supernatural justice that ended it. The story closes with Michael taking his first step back toward family and Beth ascending alongside her two companions, each transformed into her own color.
