Margaret receives a letter at her bookshop from England's most famous author, Vida Winter, requesting a biography.

Margaret meets Vida in her library and agrees to write the biography after demanding three verifiable truths.

Vida reveals her real name is Adeline March, names her birthplace, and confirms the Angelfield fire as the third truth.

Vida begins her story with Isabelle returning to Angelfield with twin infant daughters after marrying and being widowed.

The twin girls steal a neighbor's baby carriage with the baby still inside, alarming the entire village.

Mrs. Maudsley visits Angelfield to speak with Isabelle and is struck over the head with a violin.

Isabelle is taken to a psychiatric care facility; Charlie signs the admission papers and becomes distraught watching her leave.

Margaret meets Aurelius Love at the Angelfield ruins after a turning doorknob sends her fleeing down the stairs in panic.

Governess Hester Barrow arrives at Angelfield and quickly takes control of the household and the neglected twins.

Hester and Dr. Maudsley separate Emmeline and Adeline, sending Adeline to live at the doctor's house.

Mrs. Maudsley discovers Hester and her husband kissing; Hester is expelled and vanishes from Angelfield overnight.

The Missus dies after a ceiling section collapses; Vida steps out of hiding to take charge of Angelfield.

Adeline grows jealous of Emmeline's baby and attempts to burn the infant in the library fireplace.

Vida hides the baby safely in a church and later leaves him on Mrs. Love's doorstep after the library catches fire.

Vida dies shortly after finishing her story, during a snowstorm that traps everyone at her Yorkshire home.

Amateur biographer Margaret Lea receives a letter from the reclusive Vida Winter and travels to Yorkshire to hear her true life story for the first time. Vida's tale centers on the crumbling Angelfield estate, where twin daughters Emmeline and Adeline grow up neglected after their mother Isabelle is committed to a psychiatric facility. A governess named Hester arrives and imposes order, but her secret romance with the local doctor ends in scandal and she vanishes overnight, leaving the twins to revert to their wild ways. The household slowly collapses around Vida, who emerges from the shadows to take charge after the Missus dies, eventually facing a crisis when Adeline threatens Emmeline's newborn child. Vida hides the baby and pulls one twin from a burning library, then assumes the other twin's identity as the fire consumes Angelfield. Margaret, having listened to the full story, watches Vida die peacefully in a snowstorm, her long-hidden truth finally told.

The headline events driving Vida Winter's biography from first letter to final death.

As a child, Margaret secretly discovers her twin sister's birth and death certificates hidden under her mother's bed.

Margaret reads Vida's book overnight and discovers it contains only twelve stories despite being titled Thirteen Tales.

Margaret travels by train to Yorkshire and arrives at Vida's remote, dark house for the first time.

Charlie terrorizes the Angelfield household staff until nearly all of them abandon the estate.

Isabelle leaves Angelfield to pursue a neighbor boy; her grieving father locks himself in his library and dies alone.

The twins demolish John-the-dig's prized topiary garden, the work of four generations of his family.

Dr. Clifton, Vida's physician, warns Margaret privately about the severity of Vida's illness and the urgency of their work.

Margaret searches the Banbury Herald archives and finds accounts of the Angelfield fire, recorded as accidental.

Margaret visits the local churchyard and finds Charlie Angelfield's plain black gravestone hidden among the family plots.

During the twins' separation, Emmeline runs headlong into a mirror believing her own reflection is Adeline.

A letter arrives announcing Isabelle's death; Charlie stops eating and then disappears entirely from his locked room.

Vida discovers Charlie's body in a remote woods cottage near a gun, realizing he died by suicide.

John-the-dig dies in a fall from a roof ladder; his safety catch appears to have been deliberately released.

Aurelius shows Margaret the few items he was found with as a baby, which he calls his inheritance.

Aurelius learns that Karen, a local woman with children, is Ambrose Proctor's daughter and therefore his own half-sister.

Before Margaret ever travels to Yorkshire, she carries her own buried secret: the childhood discovery of a twin sister who died at birth. Vida's story unfolds through the Angelfield estate's slow decline, tracing Charlie's cruelty to the staff, the twins' reckless destruction of the topiary garden, and Isabelle's final unraveling. Margaret's research trips reveal the public record of Angelfield's tragedy, including fire reports in the local archives and the hidden gravestone of Charlie Angelfield. Back in Vida's story, the separation of the twins produces its own quiet devastation, as Emmeline crashes into her own reflection believing it is Adeline, and Charlie slowly disappears after Isabelle's death is announced. The mysteries converge as Margaret meets Aurelius Love and he shows her the few strange items he was found with as a baby, until finally the last pieces fall into place and Aurelius discovers he has living family nearby.

The supporting secrets and discoveries that surround Angelfield's hidden history.

Margaret's father becomes so absorbed reading one of Vida's novels at the bookshop that he forgets everything else.

Charlie attempts to terrorize Isabelle as he terrorized the staff, but she outsmarts him and the two become inseparable.

Isabelle meets local neighbor Roland March at a summer picnic and uses Charlie to distract Roland's sister while she pursues him.

Margaret's research in the almanacs confirms Vida's story and reveals that Charlie Angelfield was legally declared dead.

Hester spots an unknown boy in the Angelfield garden; John-the-dig denies any knowledge of such a child.

Hester sees the twins playing together outside when Adeline is supposed to be confined at the doctor's house.

Margaret receives a legal document bearing the signature Adeline March, proving that Vida and Adeline are the same person.

Margaret wakes to bright moonlight and discovers Emmeline alive and living secretly at Vida's Yorkshire estate.

Margaret uses the phonetic alphabet to transcribe Emmeline's words and eventually decodes a message in the twins' secret language.

Aurelius arrives at Vida's estate on Margaret's birthday with a cake; Margaret tells him that Emmeline is his mother.

Margaret brings Aurelius to meet Emmeline; Emmeline cries out and collapses, and Margaret passes out from fever.

Margaret reads Hester's diary on a train and decides to travel to Angelfield instead of going home for Christmas.

Margaret recognizes Aurelius's baby bag as the same game bag carried by Ambrose Proctor, linking the two central mysteries.

Vida locks the library door during the fire and realizes she cannot be certain which twin she saved.

Margaret opens the envelope left by Mr. Lomax and reads the thirteenth tale — a dark retelling of Cinderella — for the first time.

Small moments of foreshadowing — like Margaret's father losing himself entirely in one of Vida's novels — hint from the start that Vida's stories hold extraordinary power over their readers. Inside the Angelfield story, turning points accumulate quietly: Charlie and Isabelle's strange bond is forged, Isabelle's pursuit of Roland sets tragedy in motion, and Hester's repeated sightings of an unknown garden boy point toward a hidden truth that no one is ready to name. Margaret's research trips and a signed legal document gradually confirm Vida's account, while a moonlit encounter with Emmeline and a painstakingly decoded message in a secret twin language crack the central mystery wide open. The climax arrives when Aurelius is reunited with his mother on Margaret's birthday, the diary on the train redirects Margaret toward Angelfield instead of home, and the baby bag connects two separate mysteries into one. The thirteenth tale itself, finally read at the very end, delivers the darkest revelation of all: the story of Vida's own violent and secret origin.

The key discoveries and turning points that unlock the truth of Vida's identity.
