The sun rises and erases the darkness of night over the Italian mountains and surrounding ocean.

The sleepless speaker lies beneath an old chestnut tree in the Apennine mountains, troubled by unnamed thoughts.

The speaker falls into a strange trance as the sun grows and the darkness is blotted out.

The speaker sees a vast processional of countless diverse people moving along a street in his vision.

A chariot of blazing cold light appears in the processional, drawn by unseen winged creatures.

The charioteer inside the chariot is revealed to have four faces, all with blindfolded eyes.

Captives ranging from the sorrowful to the powerful are seen chained to the chariot of life.

A sacred few who refused religious and royal power are revealed to have escaped the chariot entirely.

Wild dancers surround the chariot in an ecstatic and unrestrained frenzy of movement.

The speaker asks aloud whose shape is riding inside the chariot.

A ghostly shade answers the speaker's question and identifies itself as the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Rousseau declares that Life itself rides in the chariot and that love conquered even him.

Rousseau names political, religious, and intellectual leaders as captives chained to the chariot.

Rousseau recounts sleeping under a mountain and waking with no memory of his former life.

The speaker asks Rousseau what Life is, and the poem ends before the question can be fully answered.

The poem opens with a sunrise over the Italian Apennines, where the sleepless speaker lies beneath a chestnut tree before falling into a deep visionary trance. In the vision, a vast processional of humanity moves endlessly around a blazing chariot of cold light, with a blindfolded charioteer guiding it through a crowd of wild dancers. Captives of every kind — from the sorrowful to the powerful — are chained to the chariot, though a sacred few who refused worldly power escape it entirely. A ghostly shade appears to the speaker, reveals itself as the philosopher Rousseau, and declares that Life itself rides in the chariot and has conquered all through love. Rousseau names the greatest political, religious, and intellectual leaders among the captives, then recounts waking under a mountain with no memory of his former life. The poem ends with the speaker asking Rousseau what Life truly is, a question that goes unanswered as the work breaks off unfinished.

Life's triumphal chariot, its captives, and Rousseau's revelation.

Flowers open to the sun and release their perfume like incense at dawn across the mountainside.

The processional crowd moves without memory or direction, cut off from all sounds of nature around them.

Members of the crowd interact with shadows in varied ways — pursuing, fleeing, or entirely ignoring them.

A radiant woman at the center of the dance draws young dancers toward her and repels them like moths around a flame.

Some dancers are struck by a lightning-like force and disappear without a trace, like foam after a tide recedes.

Old dancers trail slowly and coldly behind the fiery young dancers, shaking their grey hair toward the chariot.

The speaker compares the visionary processional and its chained captives to the triumphal parades of ancient Rome.

The speaker initially mistakes Rousseau's shade for a gnarled tree root and tangled white grass on the hillside.

Rousseau points out Napoleon Bonaparte as a specific figure who was conquered by life's chariot.

Rousseau identifies Voltaire, Immanuel Kant, and specific monarchs including Frederick II among the captives.

Rousseau describes the river near his mountain cave erasing a grieving mother's memory and a deposed king's pride.

A female shape of light emerges near a glowing well and creates a rainbow by splashing water from a fountain.

The dancing feet of the shape stamp out memories like dying embers, replacing darkness with day.

Rousseau drinks from the crystal glass and his brain turns to sand before a vision of sunrise opens before him.

The chariot's exhausted followers grow weary of the manic dance and fall by the roadside as the day grows old.

Before the trance begins, nature awakens beautifully around the speaker — flowers open to release their perfume, birds sing, and the ocean reflects the rising sun. In the vision, the processional crowd moves without memory or direction, cut off from nature's sounds, interacting with shadows in varied and personal ways. A radiant woman draws young dancers toward her like moths before some vanish like foam, while old dancers trail coldly behind the young. The speaker initially mistakes the shade of Rousseau for a twisted tree root before recognizing him, after which Rousseau names specific captives including Napoleon, Voltaire, and Kant. Rousseau then recounts the river near his mountain cave that erases memories, the emergence of a female shape of light who creates a rainbow and carries a drug of forgetting, and the way her dancing feet stamp out thoughts like embers. After drinking from her crystal glass, Rousseau's brain turns to sand, and eventually the chariot's exhausted followers collapse by the roadside as the long day draws to a close.

The parade's crowd, dancers, named captives, and the shape of light.

The speaker discovers he is bathed in dew alongside the surrounding plants, confirming his state is trance, not sleep.

The processional crowd is revealed to contain people of every age, from infancy to old age, like scattered autumn leaves.

The chariot's brilliant light is shown to be tempered by a dark shadow, revealing that life is inseparable from death.

The chariot is drawn by winged creatures whose sounds can be heard but whose forms remain completely invisible.

The speaker reflects on how Napoleon's boundless will became separated from any guiding sense of goodness.

Rousseau reveals that life conquers through love even those left unmoved by gold, pain, age, or slavery.

Rousseau and the speaker debate how new generations always rise on the surface to replace the old.

Rousseau claims he is a creator rather than a destroyer, setting himself apart from the chariot's captives.

The speaker prompts Rousseau to explain how he personally came to join the chariot's processional.

The shape of light bends her luminous hair into the river of forgetfulness while holding the crystal glass.

The shape of light commands Rousseau to drink, and he rises toward the glass like a lily opening to the morning sun.

After drinking, Rousseau witnesses the chariot moving triumphantly through the forest under a victorious rainbow.

Rousseau plunges into the cold light of the chariot's processional, joining the flood of dancers surrounding it.

Phantoms perch on crowns and papal tiaras and melt onto young faces, carrying human beauty away with them.

Rousseau begins answering what life is, speaking of those happy in the fold of something, before the poem breaks off mid-sentence.

The speaker's trance is confirmed not by sleep but by dew covering him alongside the surrounding plants, and the vision reveals a crowd of every age — from infants to the elderly — moving like fallen leaves. A crucial revelation emerges when the chariot's blazing light is shown to be tempered by a dark shadow, exposing life's inseparable bond with death. Rousseau confesses that love conquered him absolutely, even more than gold or pain could conquer others, and he distinguishes himself from the chariot's destructive captives by claiming the identity of a creator. After the speaker prompts Rousseau to tell his own story, Rousseau recounts the shape of light bending her hair into the river of forgetfulness while holding her crystal glass, and her simple command to drink. Rousseau drinks, plunges into the cold light of the processional, and witnesses phantoms perching on crowns and papal tiaras while extinguishing human beauty. The pool closes as Rousseau begins to answer the ultimate question about what Life is, only for his sentence — and the entire poem — to break off mid-line.
