Chapter 7 Summary: “March, Tryout Day”

Christina wakes up on the morning of the tryouts and irons her shirt, brushes her teeth, and makes her ponytail as perfect as possible. Her parents offer words of encouragement, but Christina is full of doubt. At the tryouts, all the girls gather and everyone is nervous. The pairs each wait for their turns to perform outside the gymnasium, and Christina knows there’s a gym full of chattering students awaiting her. As Christina and Stephanie await their turn, Christina tries to gear herself up. When her name is called, she looks determined to succeed.

Christina and Stephanie step out onto the gym floor, and it looks massive and daunting. Their routine starts out a little sloppy and uninspired, but when Christina hears Tobin calling her “Rice Girl” again, her attitude changes and she decides she has to do her best. She and Stephanie ace their routine and their stunt, and Christina leaves the gym feeling confident and filled with enthusiasm. She sees Megan on the other side, and they share their success.

All the girls gather in an office to hear whether they made the squad or not. The principal makes the announcement, and as each name is called, Christina becomes more and more nervous. When all eight cheerleaders are announced and neither Christina nor Megan’s name are called, Christina realizes that neither of them made the squad. Shocked, Christina looks at Megan, who bursts into tears and runs out of the room. Christina tries to chase her, but Megan gets in her parents’ car and leaves, unable to talk about how upset she is. Christina gets in the car with her mom and they head to the restaurant, where Christina locks herself in the bathroom and cries.

Spring break follows the tryouts and Christina spends the first few days at home, sulking and watching Star Trek. When her mom brings her to the restaurant, Christina’s dad reminds her that she may not get everything she wants in life, no matter how badly she wants it but that things will turn out okay either way. Christina calls Megan and brings some food over, and they hang out together. When Megan invites Christina to a gymnastics camp over the summer, Christina declines, saying she would rather go to a theater camp instead. She starts to realize that she and Megan are going their own way but that they will always be best friends. When Christina goes back to school the following week, she sees Tobin being yelled at and punched by his dad. Inside, Tobin starts making fun of Christina again, but she’s no longer affected and almost pities him. Christina sits with her new friends at lunch, from art class and the tryouts, and everyone marvels at her delicious Thai food.

Chapter 8 Summary: “April, Seventh Grade Carried On”

By April, Christina starts to wonder what her direction is and where she belongs. She sees a sign for an impromptu speaking class and asks one of her new friends to sign up with her. Christina and her new friend join the class and prepare for an upcoming competition. Christina is a natural and tells engaging, funny stories. She uses the confidence and crowd-pleasing skills she gained from cheerleading practice to enhance her art. At the competition, she draws a topic that asks her to talk about why Texas is the best state. Christina reflects on this for a moment and decides to talk about the people who make Texas great: her friends, her family, and even herself. Christina wins first prize and glows with pride. She invites her friends out to lunch at the Golden Dragon and opens a fortune cookie that reads, “Every ending is a new beginning” (257). She realizes that while she didn’t get to become a cheerleader or the most popular person, what she did get (new friends, a sense of direction) was even better.

Chapters 7-8 Analysis

The opening scene of the final round of tryouts is intense and filled with suspense as Christina walks out onto the gym floor with her partner. Amid a dark sea of faces and a massive floor, Christina and Stephanie stand as small as ants, suddenly unsure if they are really prepared. At the tryouts, Christina gains and loses more than she ever could have expected. Christina doesn’t make the cheerleading team or become popular, despite the fact that she desperately wanted these things and put all of her efforts into it for months: “This whole thing has taught me that you can want something with your whole soul and still not get it” (223). It is a hard lesson to learn but one which does not deter either of them from future pursuits. The tryouts and the months leading up to them still prove to give Christina what she needs, even though she didn’t get what she initially wanted, supporting the underlying theme that has been building throughout the story, Disappointment as an Opportunity for Something Better. At the tryout, Christina is mentally ready; she is prepared, practiced, confident, and determined. These traits are ones that she carries forward with her into future pursuits. Christina’s decision to take the risk of trying out in front of the entire school shows dedication and self-assuredness, which she lacked when the school year began. She has goals and dreams, and she works to achieve them. Just completing the tryout alone gives Christina an amazing feeling of accomplishment and pride, and it’s something that she starts to chase. Christina is distraught when she realizes she didn’t make the squad: “I had lost so much: cheerleading, my chance at being popular. I was a bundle of weird emotions” (215-16). These feelings are soon transformed into optimism and joy, as Christina finds herself on a different path set out just for her.

After the tryouts, Christina and Megan both spend time on their own, processing their emotions and coming to terms with How Growth Changes Friendship. Christina feels completely humiliated, but these negative emotions are so strong that they soon give way to something else entirely. With the support of her parents and the knowledge that she will always have her friendship with Megan, Christina decides that she doesn’t need anyone to tell her she deserves to exist or belong anymore. Christina knows that she can feel the same sense of belonging that she longed for without being popular or a cheerleader; she has Megan, she has her art class friends, and she even became friends with a couple of the cheerleaders. Christina’s path takes a turn for the better when she decides to pursue storytelling, a natural talent of hers that she has unknowingly practiced for years. Christina also comes to terms with her identity as a Thai-American and gives a moving speech about how the people of Texas are what make it great. The feeling of accomplishment and acceptance that Christina longed for was waiting for her all along, in a form she did not initially expect.
