Background

Genre Context: Romantasy

Romantasy is a recent subgenre that blends the common tropes of both romance and fantasy genres. Although the term “romantasy” was largely popularized by the many #BookTok reviewers and influencers on the social media platform TikTok, the subgenre predates the term and was first identified as “fantasy romance” or “romantic fantasy.” Romantasy has proven to be an amorphous and fluid category whose defining characteristics have been hotly debated among readers and writers alike. Some argue that romantasy is a romance plot line set in a fantasy world, while others contend that the subgenre features fantasy plots with explicit sex scenes. Still others argue that romantasy requires an even balance between a romance-based internal conflict and an external, concurrent fantasy plot line. While there is still disagreement, this third option appears to be the most widely-accepted (Lob, M. K. “What is Romantasy, Anyway?” Writer’s Digest Online, 27 Feb 2024).

Though some readers and reviewers argue that romantasy began with the rise of Sarah J. Maas’s Court of Thorn and Roses series and Jennifer Armentrout’s From Blood and Ash series, earlier contributors to the subgenre include Jacqueline Carey, who wrote the Kushiel’s Dart series (Donaldson, Kayleigh. “Romantasy is Everywhere, But Its Legacy Long Predates TikTok.” Paste Magazine, 20 March 2024). It is also important to note that there is considerable overlap between the subgenres of romantasy and paranormal romance, the latter of which features romantic interactions between humans and paranormal beings and often take place in contemporary urban settings. By contrast, most romantasy is set in alternative fantasy worlds, even though the plots continue to rely heavily on popular romance tropes. Although some critics have raised concerns about the lack of diversity in romantasy, pointing to a predominance of straight, white characters, a handful of successful romantasies have featured greater diversity, such as Freya Marske’s A Marvellous Light.

Series Context: Hart and Mercy

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is the first installment in Megan Bannen’s new romantasy series. The second installment, The Undermining of Twyla and Frank, was released in 2024, and the third installment, The Undercutting of Rosie and Frank, is scheduled for release in July 2025. All three novels are set in the same fantasy world and make references to the same group of friends. Reviewers have praised Bannen’s detailed world-building, which is a crucial aspect of the series. Additionally, each novel is heavily inspired by a popular romantic comedy film.

The couple featured in the first novel, Hart and Mercy, and the couple in the second novel, Twyla and Frank, reside in the town of Eternity. Hart, Twyla, and Frank are all Tanrian marshals, and the magical region of Tanria and its connection to the local religion prove to be also crucial to the series’ progression. Within this particular fantasy world, the humans worship many New Gods; the major deities include the Unknown God and the Three Fathers of Death—the Salt Sea, the Warden, and Grandfather Bones. The New Gods are in conflict with their parents, the Old Gods, and have locked the Old Gods in the magically sealed area called Tanria, which is located on the island of Bushong. At one point, the Unknown God released the Old Gods to live in the stars, after which Tanria became a home to special plants and animals. The region was entirely sealed off until 25 years ago when Dr. Adam Lee developed a portal that allowed humans to enter Tanria. Following this development, border towns arose around the Mist wall of Tanria. Although the Tanrian marshals patrol the legal entrances to Tanria, poachers have devised pirated portals to sneak into the magical region. The primary danger of Tanria is the possibility of attack by the zombie-like drudges.
