The Verifiers

Claudia Lin, a 25-year-old Chinese American woman, has secretly left her position at Aurum Financial to work at Veracity, a small agency in Tribeca that investigates whether people's online dating matches are lying about themselves. The agency operates on referrals and keeps findings confidential. It is run by Komla Atsina, a reserved, enigmatic boss, alongside Becks Rittel, his sharp-tongued second-in-command. Claudia, an English and history major, was recruited after excelling at Murder Most Foul, an online murder-mystery game Komla designed. She has not told her family about the change: Her older brother, Charles, a consultant at Precision Consulting, arranged her previous position, and their mother, a Taiwanese immigrant who raised three children alone after their father left, would disapprove. Her older sister, Coraline, works in fashion marketing.

A new client calling herself Iris Lettriste commissions Veracity to investigate two men from the dating platform Soulmate. The first is Charretter, a user who disappeared after Iris suggested meeting in person. Iris has never met Charretter and seems motivated by something beyond romance. The second is Jude Kalman, a private equity professional she dated briefly. Claudia analyzes Charretter's chat records and notices oddities: consistent activity patterns, avoidance of meetings, and an insistence that Iris visit a specific art show and report back. Charretter seems more interested in collecting information than forming a connection. For Jude, surveillance reveals he is married with a child. At a follow-up meeting, Iris admits she has not been fully honest and promises to explain, but she never appears again. Komla closes the case. The narrator reveals the woman they knew as Iris has been dead for nearly two weeks.

The real Iris Lettriste contacts Veracity. A corporate lawyer, Iris explains that their client was actually her younger sister, Sarah Reaves, a freelance journalist who wrote about technology. Sarah died of an overdose of Strobinex, a synthetic migraine medication she took daily, in what was ruled a suicide. She had borrowed Iris's identity to use Veracity's services. Komla refuses to disclose anything and tells Iris bluntly that she did not know her sister well. Iris approaches Claudia outside, asks for help, and shows her a handwritten list found among Sarah's things with four partially underlined items: "Compatibility?!", "Precision," "Veracity," and "Romantick." Claudia recognizes three as connected to the dating industry: Precision Consulting, Veracity, and the Romantick, an anti-matchmaker activist group. Against Komla's orders, Claudia agrees to help and theorizes that Sarah came to Veracity as part of a journalistic investigation.

Claudia discovers that Sarah's, Jude's, and Charretter's Soulmate profiles have all been deleted. She confronts Jude in Central Park and records the conversation. Jude reveals that Sarah blackmailed him for $100,000 after discovering he was married, denies harming her, and says she seemed preoccupied with work. Claudia also investigates on behalf of Coraline, who suspects her boyfriend, Lionel Timbers, of cheating. She finds no evidence of infidelity but discovers that Lionel's story, accepted by the prestigious magazine Zinc Cabin, draws on Coraline's private family revelations.

Claudia breaks into Sarah's apartment and finds her laptop and phone. Lock-screen notifications reveal yoga classes scheduled after Sarah's death, the $100,000 deposit from Jude, and a file upload to a cloud service called Dispatch by someone named "St. Elmo." Another notification, from a medication delivery service called A Dose a Day, offers Sarah a discount to resubscribe. The evidence that Sarah had future plans and that her medication subscription was canceled convinces Claudia that Sarah did not kill herself. The next morning, Claudia's bicycle pedal breaks off mid-ride as an SUV slows beside her, and she crashes. Suspecting sabotage, she tells Komla and Becks everything, including her theory that Sarah was murdered. Komla fires her for violating company policies, confiscates the phone, and offers a deal: She forgets Veracity, and Veracity forgets her.

During weeks of unemployment, Claudia cracks Sarah's Dispatch password using the underlined letters from the list but cannot complete the login because two-factor authentication sends a code to Sarah's phone, now in Veracity's possession. She triggers the code anyway, alerting Komla and Becks. She tracks down Professor Michael Lindenberg, Sarah's ex and a Columbia journalism professor, who confirms Sarah was working on a story. Claudia theorizes that someone canceled Sarah's A Dose a Day subscription and replaced her medication with tampered packaging containing a fatal dose. Police report details confirm this discrepancy, proving the medication was planted.

Becks appears at Claudia's apartment, revealing she has been investigating independently with Squirrel, Veracity's IT contractor. Veracity, she discloses, accesses dating-platform data by hacking directly into matchmakers' systems. The agency's secondary purpose is to monitor for "synths": sophisticated AI-generated dating profiles that interact convincingly with real users to collect data. Komla left Soulmate after growing uncomfortable with the company's plans for these bots and founded Veracity partly to watch for their deployment. Becks also reveals that Komla sabotaged Claudia's bicycle, with the SUV driven by Squirrel, to frighten her into abandoning the investigation.

The three conclude that Charretter was a synth. Claudia argues the killer is Lucinda Clay, a senior vice president at Soulmate and Komla's former romantic and business partner, since the deleted profiles could only have been removed at the platform level. Becks reveals that Komla deleted the A Dose a Day notification from Sarah's phone, concealing evidence to protect Lucinda. Sarah's Dispatch files contain documents about "Project Tilt," a plan to use AI to shape consumer choices, and evidence that Soulmate acquired Compatibility. The team confronts Komla, who confirms that he and Lucinda cofounded Compatibility, an early dating platform that developed the synths to verify user honesty. Their visions diverged: Komla wanted the synths to provide self-knowledge, while Lucinda embraced "choice architecture," using the synths to nudge users into conforming with algorithmic predictions rather than merely predicting preferences. Komla admits he told Lucinda about Sarah's inquiries, intending to warn her. Two weeks later, Sarah's medication subscription was canceled; two weeks after that, Sarah was dead.

Claudia secures entry to a charity gala where Lucinda is honored. She engages Lucinda in conversation before yielding her seat to Komla and listening through a Bluetooth earpiece. Lucinda reveals that Sarah approached her months before her death, blackmailing her for Strobinex money in exchange for silence. Lucinda paid, but Sarah continued investigating. Lucinda confirms she killed Sarah, saying she "took care of it." Polaris Capital, she adds, is pressuring her to extend the synths beyond dating to all consumer businesses.

Komla transfers ownership of Veracity to Becks, Squirrel, and Claudia, then severs contact to bring the recording of Lucinda's confession to the police. Sarah's case is reopened as a potential homicide. Claudia discovers that Cameron Keller, a former Precision consultant who may have been Sarah's source St. Elmo, has died of apparent cardiac arrest; Becks's response suggests she finds it suspicious. On Christmas Eve, Claudia begins coming out to her mother, who agrees to accept "two out of three" of her criteria: nice, Chinese, boy. Veracity continues under new ownership, monitoring synths that are evolving beyond detection. Claudia settles into her role as a verifier, aware that the battle over data, autonomy, and truth is only beginning.
