The Way of Kings opens with nine of ten divine Heralds abandoning their sacred pact with humanity, a betrayal that sets a cosmic catastrophe in motion thousands of years later. In the present, assassin Szeth kills King Gavilar on behalf of the Parshendi, plunging Alethkar into a prolonged and costly war on the Shattered Plains. Two young protagonists are drawn toward that conflict: Kaladin, a soldier betrayed into slavery who must find the will to protect his doomed bridge crew, and Shallan, a noble's daughter who worms her way into a powerful scholar's confidence to steal a magical artifact. As both characters face near-death trials — Kaladin surviving a brutal highstorm and Shallan being poisoned alongside her mentor — they are forced into critical choices that define their characters. The novel climaxes at the Tower plateau, where Highprince Sadeas betrays Dalinar and leaves his forces to die, only for Kaladin to unlock his full Radiant powers and rescue them. The aftermath reshapes every major character's fate and closes with a terrifying herald announcing that the long-feared Desolation has finally returned.

Behind the headline events, a web of smaller but crucial moments shapes the characters and the world of Roshar. Kaladin's arc is defined by incremental acts of leadership — drilling his men, harvesting medicine in secret, and building a community around a shared fire — as he transforms a group of doomed slaves into a cohesive unit. Meanwhile, Szeth's situation grows more dangerous as his Oathstone passes through criminal hands before landing with a powerful and shadowy new master who gives him a list of rulers to kill. Dalinar's political maneuvering runs alongside his private struggle, as a spanreed message from Jasnah about Voidbringers and a timely warning from the court jester Wit force him to reckon with Sadeas's treachery before it is too late. After the disaster at the Tower, the aftermath unfolds in swift, charged scenes: Navani's prayer, Dalinar's confrontation with the king, and the liberation of the bridgemen. The pool closes with Jasnah and Shallan committing to travel to the Shattered Plains, setting up the series' next chapter.

The Way of Kings is driven by a series of revelations that overturn what characters and readers believe to be true. Shallan's arc is defined by moral reckoning: she witnesses Jasnah's cold-blooded alley killings, resolves to justify the theft, and then has the Soulcaster's true nature exposed when Kabsal's poisoning forces her to confess everything. Kaladin's arc hinges on the brutal backstory gradually revealed through flashbacks — the betrayal by Amaram who branded him a slave — and on his pivotal conversation with Wit, whose parable finally breaks his belief that he is cursed and allows him to accept personal agency. Dalinar's journey is marked by visions that grow increasingly difficult to dismiss: a vision of Knights Radiant defending humanity, Navani's discovery that his ramblings are spoken in a dead language, and a final shattering revelation that the Almighty himself is dead. Each of these turning points strips away a false certainty and demands that the character rebuild their worldview from scratch, ultimately preparing all three protagonists to face the Desolation together.
