The story begins when a catastrophic storm destroys the Hed hockey rink and claims the life of Ramona, Beartown's beloved matriarch. Her death draws scattered residents home and forges an unlikely alliance between old enemies Peter and Teemu. As politicians force the two rival towns to share a rink and then threaten to merge their clubs entirely, tensions between Beartown and Hed explode into street-level violence. A fraudulent financial scheme inside the Beartown hockey club surfaces at the worst possible moment, and Kira takes it upon herself to shield her family without Peter's knowledge. Events reach their terrible peak on the night of the first A-team game, when Matteo enters the locker room and opens fire and Benji dies protecting others. The novel closes at Benji's funeral, where children from both towns plant trees side by side as a fragile promise of healing.

While the main drama unfolds between the rival towns, quieter but equally significant events shape the people at the story's center. Hannah and Ana deliver a baby in the storm-battered forest, and Fatima's fall in a ditch drives her son Amat out of months of self-imposed isolation for the first time. A chance meeting on a train between Maya and an investigative journalist plants the seed of the hockey-fraud revelation, while Tails's staged car vandalism sets the legal trap that will later ensnare him. The factory accident that causes a Hed woman to miscarry deepens the hostility between the two communities, and Matteo's grief sharpens into purpose when his parents return home with his sister's ashes. These events build toward the shooting and its immediate cover-up, and ultimately toward Tails quietly volunteering to take the blame for the fraud in order to spare Peter from prison.

Beneath the surface of the town rivalry lies a web of secrets and private turning points that determine the novel's outcome. Peter's profound loss of identity after leaving hockey and Matteo's storm-night discovery of a neighbors' gun cabinet each quietly set events in motion before anyone else notices. The corruption inside Beartown hockey is exposed piece by piece, through Kira's horror at finding Peter's post-resignation signatures on fraudulent documents and through Tails's desperate confession to Richard Theo. Ruth's fate is laid bare in devastating detail: assaulted, blackmailed with photographs, disbelieved by police, and ultimately driven to flee until her accidental death, while Mumble carried silent guilt for failing to stop it. The final turning point arrives when Benji finds Amat waiting with his gear and refuses to let him quit—a moment of connection that brings Benji back to the rink on the very night it costs him his life. The novel ends not with closure but with continuation, as Alicia steps onto the national stage wearing Benji's number and carrying forward everything that came before.
