Sartre introduces The Wretched of the Earth as a seminal work that all Europeans, especially the French, must read.

Fanon opens his analysis by declaring that decolonization is always a violent phenomenon requiring a total overturning of the existing social order.

Fanon describes the colonial world as divided into two irreconcilable zones: one clean and prosperous for settlers, one impoverished for natives.

Fanon argues that colonizers systematically dehumanize native peoples to justify their exploitation and maintain the racial hierarchy of the colonial order.

Fanon argues that without violent struggle, a colonized local elite simply replaces settlers without dismantling existing oppressive structures.

Fanon accuses Europe of having built its prosperity directly on the exploitation and suffering of its colonized peoples.

Fanon criticizes nationalist parties for mimicking colonial political structures rather than mobilizing rural populations in the liberation struggle.

Fanon argues that in colonized countries, rural peasants — not urban workers — are the most dispossessed class and the true engine of liberation.

Fanon identifies the lumpen-proletariat — dispossessed young men on society's margins — as a volatile but essential force in the anticolonial struggle.

Fanon warns that after independence, the national middle class typically steps into the settlers' position and begins exploiting its own people.

Fanon traces how postcolonial nationalism steadily devolves into ultranationalism, chauvinism, and ultimately racism directed against other African peoples.

Fanon argues that colonization suppresses local culture entirely, making the liberation struggle itself the ultimate act of cultural expression.

A French police inspector seeks Fanon's professional help to eliminate the psychological side effects of his torture work so he can continue the job.

Fanon debunks the colonial myth that Algerians are genetically predisposed to violence, attributing criminal behavior entirely to the colonial system.

Fanon concludes by calling on developing nations to reject both Europe and the United States as models and forge an entirely new path.

Sartre's preface frames The Wretched of the Earth as an essential and urgent text for European readers, even as Fanon's argument is ultimately directed at the colonized world. Fanon establishes that colonial society is fundamentally Manichaean — divided into two irreconcilable zones — and that the systematic dehumanization of native peoples is the mechanism sustaining this divide. He argues that decolonization is inherently violent because the colonial order cannot be negotiated away but must be completely overturned. After diagnosing these structural problems, Fanon turns to the postcolonial period, warning that newly liberated nations risk reproducing colonial hierarchies when the national middle class simply replaces settlers without changing any underlying structures. His clinical case studies from the Algerian War reveal how colonial violence deforms the psyche of both oppressor and oppressed alike. The book ends with Fanon's call for developing nations to reject European and American models entirely and forge a new path for all of humanity.

The core arguments driving Fanon's theory of colonial violence and liberation.

Sartre accuses the French public of hypocrisy, arguing that colonial atrocities in Algeria have become a permanent stain on French national identity.

Sartre fully endorses violence as a legitimate and necessary expression of political agency for colonized peoples fighting for independence.

Fanon observes that colonized intellectuals and elites initially seek compromise and coexistence with settlers rather than supporting armed resistance.

Fanon argues that guerrilla warfare, as demonstrated in past liberation struggles, allows colonized fighters to overcome numerically superior colonial forces.

Fanon argues that both Christianity and local belief systems function as control mechanisms encouraging colonized peoples to accept oppression as God's will.

Fanon demands former colonial powers pay reparations to ex-colonies, comparing the obligation to the reparations demanded of Germany after World War II.

Fanon describes how radical nationalists fleeing police persecution find refuge in the countryside and begin politically educating rural communities.

Fanon argues that shared participation in the violent liberation struggle overcomes cultural and social divisions among the different segments of colonized society.

Fanon warns that after liberation, the national political party typically becomes a tool of personal enrichment and elite control rather than public service.

Fanon argues that colonized artists must situate themselves in a broad global cultural landscape rather than imitating fossilized local traditions.

An FLN taxi driver develops impotence after learning that French police repeatedly raped his wife during interrogation, overwhelming him with shame and guilt.

Two teenage Algerian boys kill their European playmate without remorse, justifying it as resistance against colonialism.

Children and women displaced by the French 'burnt earth' policy develop severe trauma symptoms including paranoia, suicidal tendencies, and extreme anxiety.

Fanon documents that victims of electrical torture develop persistent pins-and-needles sensations and an enduring phobia of electricity.

Fanon argues that the United States has become just as corrupt as its European predecessors and fails to offer humanity a genuinely new model.

Sartre's preface opens by condemning French hypocrisy about colonial atrocities and endorsing violence as a legitimate political act, setting a confrontational tone for the book. Fanon then builds his argument by examining the practical obstacles to liberation, including the role of religion as a tool of colonial control and the economic case for demanding reparations from former colonial powers. In Part 2, Fanon traces how the liberation struggle gains momentum through grassroots political education in the countryside and how shared violence forges unity among otherwise divided social groups. The dangers of postcolonial stagnation are explored through cultural analysis and a warning about the corruption of the national political party. Fanon's clinical case studies — from the impotent FLN taxi driver to traumatized refugee children and women — provide devastating emotional evidence of colonialism's psychological destruction. The book closes with Fanon's verdict that the United States, far from offering a new model, has replicated the worst failures of European civilization.

Secondary arguments, historical examples, and key case studies throughout the book.

Sartre argues that Fanon writes for colonized peoples rather than European audiences, rendering Europe redundant and stripping away its pretense of cultural supremacy.

Sartre identifies the core mechanism of colonial subjugation: colonizers leave native populations half-broken, ensuring their children grow up violently resisting their oppressors.

Fanon cites Aimé Césaire's poetry to argue that no compromise between colonizer and colonized is possible, and only violence can reclaim native identity.

Fanon argues that communist countries, already opposed to Western capitalism, represent the most viable source of external support for the anticolonial struggle.

Fanon explains how traditional clan leaders, oracles, and medicine men collaborate with colonial authorities to protect their own positions of local influence.

Fanon describes how liberation struggles evolve from a failed initial uprising into prolonged guerrilla warfare that gradually raises the population's political consciousness.

Fanon reveals that some colonial soldiers and settlers refuse orders and choose prison over participating in the torture or killing of Algerian civilians.

Fanon argues that the national middle class, after independence, abandons the rural poor and looks exclusively to the former mother country for profit.

Fanon argues that newly liberated nations' leaders often entrench ethnic division by appointing only family or clan members to all key government positions.

A 19-year-old rebel kills an elderly settler woman who reminds him of his recently deceased mother, then suffers hallucinations and considers suicide.

A young Algerian man consumed by delusions of being a traitor attacks a French soldier, is arrested, and is subsequently tortured in custody.

A young Frenchwoman develops severe anxiety after realizing her high-ranking father has tortured and killed Algerians she has known all her life.

Fanon documents that truth serum causes some victims to constantly repeat fixed phrases or lose the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood.

Fanon reveals that after the Algerian War of Liberation begins, instances of Algerian criminality in France measurably decline, disproving claims of innate violence.

Fanon argues that Europe's great scientific and philosophical achievements cannot compensate for the atrocities perpetrated in the name of European civilization.

Sartre's preface establishes two pivotal insights: that Fanon speaks to the colonized rather than to Europe, and that the colonial system deliberately leaves its subjects half-broken, engineering the violent reactions of the next generation. Fanon then makes a series of decisive theoretical moves — citing Césaire's poetry to insist that no compromise is possible between colonizer and colonized, and identifying communist nations as the only viable external allies. The liberation struggle is revealed to be morally complex, with some colonial soldiers defecting while clan leaders betray their own communities to preserve personal influence. In the postcolonial chapters, Fanon exposes how middle-class leaders betray the revolution by hoarding power and entrenching ethnic cronyism. The clinical case studies bring individual tragedy into sharp relief, from a teenager haunted by hallucinations after an act of violence to a Frenchwoman paralyzed by her father's crimes. The book closes with Fanon's stark argument that Europe's greatest intellectual achievements cannot redeem its history of colonial atrocity.
