Defying orders, Landsman and his partner Berko pursue the case and uncover that the victim was Mendel Shpilman, the only son of powerful Verbover crime boss Heskel Shpilman. Their investigation leads Landsman to a paramilitary training facility at Peril Strait linked to the Verbovers and the United States government, where he is captured and barely escapes. With help from his uncle Hertz Shemets, Landsman identifies Alter Litvak as the mastermind of a Zionist conspiracy to destroy a Muslim shrine in Jerusalem and restore the State of Israel. Landsman navigates personal entanglements—Berko's new pregnancy, the disgraced reporter Dennis Brennan, and Bina's warnings about the limits of her protection—while gathering intelligence from informants and crime scenes across Sitka. Clues multiply as the Verbovers' inexplicable calm about Reversion points toward backroom deals, and Zimbalist's story of Mendel's miraculous healing establishes the murdered man as something far greater than a destitute heroin addict. The investigation takes a violent personal turn when Berko confronts his father Hertz about provoking the riots that killed his Tlingit mother, driving Hertz to attempt suicide. American authorities suppress the investigation, but Landsman and Bina press on through a covert arrangement with Zimbalist, reaching a painful personal reckoning over the choices they made during their marriage.

A photograph hidden in a chess book, a silent figure at a chess club, and a deliberately erased flight record all point toward a paramilitary operation deep in Alaskan territory, where Landsman discovers that his sister Naomi was murdered by the same conspirators. Flashbacks reveal Mendel as a man of genuine supernatural gifts who was nonetheless used as a pawn in Alter Litvak's Zionist plot, and who ultimately chose death as his only means of escape. After FBI agent Cashdollar forces Landsman and Bina into silence, Landsman reconstructs Mendel's final chess problem and identifies the killer through the unlikely clue of a Vicks inhaler standing in for a missing chess piece. The novel closes with Landsman breaking his deal with Cashdollar by calling a reporter, an act of defiance made possible by his restored relationship with Bina.
