Quinn enters Mahlo's office to brief him on antimemetics but is held at gunpoint by his assistant Levene.

Quinn shoots Levene, revealing that Mahlo's assistant is an antimemetic Unknown that infiltrated the office in human form.

Quinn travels to Andrew Hilton's sailboat and injects him with a serum that rapidly reverses his aging process.

Hilton reveals the existence of a world-threatening Unknown he calls the escapee, which controls anyone who can conceptualize it.

The escapee possesses Hilton's body and breaks spider-like legs through his skull, forcing Quinn to administer amnestics and leap overboard.

Quinn leads new recruit Oli Morgan to a giant antimemetic memorial monolith hidden in the forest behind UO Wyeleigh.

The entity riding a pillar of spiders seizes control of Morgan's body, sends her into cardiac arrest, and Quinn barely escapes.

Quinn opens a containment unit labeled U-3125 and discovers it is actually her own insulated war room for the antimemetic conflict.

A video recording Quinn made for herself explains that U-3125 inhabits all of reality and kills anyone who grasps its pattern.

U-3125 invades UO Wyeleigh, seizing control of Quinn's officers and destroying the facility's upper levels.

Quinn reaches the hidden vault expecting Hix's amplifier device but finds a memory bomb instead.

Quinn detonates the memory bomb, erasing all living knowledge of the Antimemetics Division throughout reality.

Adam's orchestra transforms into hostile alien creatures under Va's influence and attempts to assimilate Adam into its hive mind.

Adam finds a woman's corpse at the ruins of UO Wyeleigh and learns from her security pass that she is his wife.

Quinn's spirit, conjured by the Class Z mnestic and Hix's Irreality Amplifier, destroys Va and restores the world to normal.

Marie Quinn, chief of the Antimemetics Division, proves her division's existence to a skeptical director and neutralizes an Unknown that has infiltrated his office. She extracts critical intelligence from the Division's founder, Andrew Hilton, learning of a world-threatening entity called the escapee before it possesses him and forces her to flee. Searching for the escapee's footprint, Quinn loses a recruit to it at an ancient war memorial and later discovers her own secret war room, where recordings confirm the Organization is already losing. When the escapee attacks UO Wyeleigh, Quinn finds a memory bomb rather than the weapon she hoped for and detonates it, erasing the Division from all living memory. The world falls under the escapee's dominion until Adam Quinn, guided by the symbiotic Unknown called Sunshine, finds his wife's corpse and carries her memory to the last surviving researcher, whose device allows Quinn's spirit to destroy the entity and restore the world.

The Antimemetics Division's war against an unstoppable Unknown.

A file at Black River introduces U-0055, an antimeme that erases itself from the memory of every person who reads about it.

Junior researcher Simon Lee meets a man named Adrian Gage in the cafeteria and begins losing his memories and skills one by one.

Lee escapes to lab WY-B08-703 and reads through years of disorganized failed research left behind by Gage's previous victims.

Lee braids network cables into a chain weighted with a hard-drive array and uses the makeshift weapon to knock Gage down.

Quinn debriefs Lee after the encounter and reveals he is actually a veteran instructor who has worked at the Division for over ten years.

An Organization file documents how the Cryptomorpha gigantes species was driven to extinction after the act of directly observing it proved lethal.

Adam enters Quinn's home and is pinned down as an intruder before being formally detained for identity verification.

Quinn reviews a file recounting how she and Adam first met during a hospital encounter with the Unknown called the Digit Thief.

Quinn uses Sunshine to block Adam's ability to perceive her and orders all living memory of their marriage replaced and erased.

James Bess infiltrates Red's home in Ojai and attempts to inoculate the cult's online followers against its spread of viral ideas.

Red repossesses his body, defeats Bess, and systematically erases all living memories of the Memetics Division's existence.

Sunshine guides Adam through the antimemetic threshold surrounding the ruins of UO Wyeleigh, allowing him to perceive the facility.

Sunshine returns to Adam all the memories it stole from Quinn, showing him images of their shared life together.

Hix arrives late to a secret meeting at UO Stanmoor and reads his own brief on U-3125 for the first time.

Mahlo delivers a monologue to U-0055 in the archive library about the historical gaps that no one in the Organization can explain.

The novel builds its world through case files, secondary characters, and personal histories that run alongside Quinn's central struggle. Simon Lee's near-death encounter with a memory-eating Unknown named Gage demonstrates how implicit knowledge and archived research can be weaponized against antimemetic threats. Quinn's relationship with Adam is established through a flashback to their first meeting and then destroyed when she orders all memory of their marriage erased to protect him. Two field operatives, James Bess in Ojai and the researchers at UO Wyeleigh, suffer catastrophic losses that demonstrate the real human cost of the ongoing war. In the aftermath, Sunshine guides Adam through the ruins of Quinn's life, and the Organization's new director reflects on everything that has been lost and forgotten.

The people and files that fill out the antimemetic world.

Quinn explains to Mahlo that his missed mnestic dose caused him to forget that her entire division exists.

Lee converts the letters in Gage's name to alphanumeric codes and locates file U-7175, confirming that Gage is an antimemetic Unknown.

Hilton reveals that the Antimemetics Division undergoes a necessary cycle of collapse and rebirth every few decades to survive catastrophic loss.

Hilton discloses that the WWII-era Unthinkables developed the first memory bomb to eradicate Nazism as a concept.

Quinn realises on Hilton's sailboat that the escapee is already listening to their conversation because knowing of it gives it access to the knower.

Quinn returns home to Adam with an entire day missing from her memory and exhausts herself trying to reconstruct what happened.

Adam tells Quinn he can perceive Sunshine, and they debate whether Sunshine erased her memories of him to kill him or protect him.

Quinn steps out of the U-3125 war room airlock and discovers a built-in purging system has automatically erased everything she learned inside.

Quinn kills Lo after Lo shoots Hix and is promoted to Antimemetics Chief, then escapes Stanmoor as the DRY ERASE bomb detonates.

Hix regains consciousness inside the C. gigantes germ body and escapes a gas leak to begin secretly developing the amplifier alone.

Hix reveals inside a neural simulation that Adam cannot activate the amplifier because he does not carry the antimeme seed.

A surviving Cryptomorpha gigantes feeds on the remnants of Va's parasites as the Organization founds a new Noöspherics Division.

The novel's most pivotal moments hinge on characters discovering the true nature of a threat they cannot safely remember. Hilton's revelations about the Division's cyclical self-destruction, the origin of the memory bombs, and the existence of the escapee set the shape of the entire conflict, while Quinn's gradual realisation of how much she has already lost anchors the emotional cost. Key structural turning points — the war room's purging airlock, Quinn's use of a brain-damaging mnestic drug, and the secret Stanmoor meeting that sent Hix underground — reveal how the plan to defeat U-3125 was years in the making, built from sacrifice layered upon sacrifice. Adam's killing of Red and his confrontation with the truth inside Hix's neural simulation force the novel toward its resolution. The story closes with the world renewed, and a surviving remnant of the Cryptomorpha gigantes quietly inheriting the aftermath.
