The novel opens with Marilee summoning Gail to an unusual meeting, a social rarity that signals trouble before a word is spoken. Small but telling scenes follow — Gail storming out without her belongings, reluctantly visiting a beauty salon, and returning home to find Max has already cooked lunch — that reveal the quiet rhythms of their complicated dynamic. The days leading up to the ceremony bring both familiar faces and awkward encounters, including Gail's startled recognition of an old flame among Kenneth's relatives. The reception itself is filled with social friction: clumsy toasts, unwanted romantic attention, and Gail's ongoing effort to keep her criticisms unspoken. By the end of the three days, Gail is slowly learning to relinquish control — restraining herself when Debbie calls after the wedding, sitting peacefully with the cat, and beginning to acknowledge how much she values Max's presence.

Gail's father dies and leaves her enough money to buy a house; she tells Max she wants a divorce.

Max joins Gail on her Sunday walk and both admit they feel unprepared for the realities of growing old.

After returning from lunch, Gail decides to adopt the cat and names it Celine, reversing her earlier refusal.

Beneath the wedding's surface activity, a series of quiet revelations reshape Gail's understanding of herself and her relationships. Debbie's pointed remarks about forgiveness and grudges expose the gap between what she believes happened in her parents' marriage and what actually occurred, and Gail's attempt to set the record straight lands awkwardly. The flashback to Gail's affair with Andrew Mason reveals the full arc of a hidden chapter in her history — how it began, why it ended, and how Debbie's gymnastics injury and Max's discovery forced a reckoning. These recollections compel Gail to reassess Max's forgiveness of her, which she once dismissed as avoidance but now recognizes as genuine emotional strength. The day after the wedding becomes a quiet turning point as Gail and Max walk together, speak honestly about aging, and find their way back to real companionship. Gail's decision to adopt the cat and name it Celine marks the novel's emotional resolution, signaling she is finally ready to stop resisting connection.
