Five young American missionaries sense God's call to bring the Christian gospel to the isolated Huaorani people of Ecuador. After establishing mission work among the Quichua and other local tribes, the men learn the location of a nearby Huaorani settlement and begin planning a direct contact. They conduct weeks of encouraging gift drops by plane, then land at a riverbank site they name Palm Beach in January 1956. A brief, hopeful face-to-face encounter with three Huaorani raises their expectations for a larger meeting to follow. When a party of Huaorani men approaches the camp, radio contact with the outside world suddenly cuts off. Search teams eventually confirm all five missionaries have been killed, but the story of their sacrifice launches a new wave of missionary activity and ultimately opens a path for Elisabeth Elliot to live peacefully among the Huaorani.

Before Operation Auca could happen, five men and their families had to find their way to Ecuador through a series of personal turning points and practical challenges. Jim Elliot and Pete Fleming endured months of language training and hands-on medical service among the Quichua, while Ed McCully left a promising law career to join them, and a flood nearly halted the entire effort by destroying Shandia's buildings. Roger Youderian forged his cross-cultural skills among the Jivaro and Atshuara, and the McCullys established a forward base at Arajuno that would become the launchpad for direct outreach. Small but significant events — an overheard footprint, a rigged loudspeaker, a shared hymn before departure — built the tension as the team moved toward their historic attempt. After the deaths, two Huaorani women emerged unexpectedly from the jungle, setting in motion the chain of events that allowed Elisabeth Elliot to complete the mission her husband had started.

Elisabeth Elliot writes that unanswered questions about suffering and God's will cannot be smoothly resolved, even decades after the deaths.

Each of the five missionaries arrived at Operation Auca through a defining personal moment — Jim Elliot's ten days of prayer, Roger Youderian's wartime conversion, Pete Fleming's reluctant but ultimately certain commitment — that shaped the entire enterprise. Technical ingenuity and spiritual resolve combined as Nate Saint's cable-drop invention made the gift exchange with the Huaorani possible, while the discovery of a Huaorani-built model airplane suggested the tribe was watching with curiosity. The final day unfolded through a single fateful observation: Nate's sighting of a party of men approaching Palm Beach, followed by abrupt silence. The investigation that followed confirmed the deaths step by step, from a stripped airplane to a recovered watch to military aerial sightings. When peaceful contact with the Huaorani was finally established years later, Elisabeth Elliot learned that the attack had been triggered by a false rumor of cannibalism, and the book ultimately closes with her honest admission that even decades on, the deepest questions about God's purposes in the men's deaths remain unresolved.
