In 'Thyrsis,' Arnold's speaker returns to the Oxfordshire countryside after a long absence to mourn his dead friend, the poet Clough, whom he calls Thyrsis. He finds the familiar landscape changed and fears the beloved elm tree that symbolized their shared ideals may be gone. The speaker reflects on how Thyrsis abandoned their pastoral life for intellectual controversy before dying, while he himself was forced reluctantly into the wider world. A classical comparison makes clear that Thyrsis will not return like the migrating cuckoo, and the speaker searches the hills in grief. He finally spots the elm tree standing against the sunset and takes it as a sign that their youthful quest for truth lives on. He ends by asking to hear Thyrsis's voice encouraging him to keep seeking the shining light.

This pool traces the rich detail of the speaker's observations — the changed village signs, the warm winter evening, and Oxford's timeless dreaming spires — as he wanders the Oxfordshire countryside. He lingers on classical pastoral conventions, evoking the Sicilian shepherd's song for the dead Bion and an Orpheus-like journey into the underworld, before concluding that these ancient consolations cannot apply to an English setting Proserpine has never known. The speaker catalogs specific flowers and waterways, and mourns the people — the girl by the boatman's door, the mowers on the riverbank — who once populated his shared life with Thyrsis but are now gone. After spotting the elm tree and watching night fall, the poem imagines Thyrsis among mythological figures in the Apennines, hearing ancient Sicilian songs. The pool closes with the Scholar Gipsy's solitary pursuit of an elusive light not found in worldly success, as the speaker mourns being confined to the fatigue of city life.

The speaker spots the elm tree backed by the sunset only after crossing away from the Oxford hunting party.

This pool captures the poem's key emotional pivots, beginning with the speaker's recognition that his intimacy with the Oxfordshire hills has faded since he last walked there with Thyrsis. He issues an unusually sharp criticism of Thyrsis for abandoning their pastoral life, comparing his death to a bloom that falls too early. The speaker then faces the weight of middle age — his slowing step, his crushed hope — and even flirts with envy of Thyrsis's final repose. The discovery of the elm tree after the hunting party passes marks the poem's central turning point, transforming despair into defiant resolve. From that moment, the speaker builds a chain of affirmations: that the tree stands, the Scholar Gipsy persists, and the quest for truth is still his own — and he generously gives the final word to Thyrsis, whose imagined voice declares the light they sought is still shining.
