People create gods modeled on nature, giving them animal features like horns, moons, scaly fins, and eagle beaks.

The gods fill a fertile earth with animals, birds, fish, plants, water, and children for people to inhabit.

People feel so united with the living earth that they roll in the soil and taste its richness.

People invent money, casting coins from the same shining metals once used to sculpt sacred figures of the gods.

People discover that money cannot be eaten, worn, or burned for warmth, but can be exchanged for anything as if by magic.

People come to believe that possessing enough money will grant them the power to fly.

Money becomes a god in the third age, gaining the power to create and destroy on its own.

Money grows voracious and devours forests, croplands, and the lives of children without limit.

Money raises armies, builds ships, and constructs cities, reshaping the entire world in its image.

People in the fourth age create vast deserts of cement, poison, and sun-baked earth across the planet.

Wars, plagues, and famines erupt as the spreading deserts consume all remaining fertile land.

No land is left anywhere that can grow food, and all life on the planet begins to disappear.

The earth becomes tidy and silent, emptied of every weed, insect, and crawling creature.

The last surviving person begins recording the full history of their civilization on a brass cylinder.

The final narrator buries the brass cylinder in a cairn by a dry lakeshore and asks alien readers for prayers.

This pool traces the central arc of the story, moving through each of the five ages from creation to extinction. In the first age, people live in harmony with nature, worshipping gods shaped by the animal world around them. The invention of money in the second age begins to sever that connection, replacing direct relationships with nature with an abstract system of exchange. By the third age, money has become an all-consuming god that devours forests, croplands, and human lives in its hunger for more. The fourth age sees people create vast deserts of cement, poison, and baked earth until no food can grow anywhere on the planet. The story closes with the last surviving person burying a record of their civilization in a brass cylinder, asking any alien readers for prayers.

The five ages of a civilization's rise and fall.

People of the first age honestly acknowledge that their gods can be cruel, maintaining a clear-eyed relationship with the divine.

People celebrate their gods by painting mythological scenes on temple walls in shining colors.

People craft statues of their gods from shining metals, linking sacred art directly to precious earthly materials.

One face of each coin carries an image of nature, preserving a faint echo of the old gods within the new currency.

The other face of each coin shows the severed head of a king, elevating human authority above the divine.

Trade and commerce replace the direct relationship people once had with growing and harvesting their own food.

Money learns to talk, gaining a political voice powerful enough to override other sources of authority.

The two faces of money transform from images of nature and royalty into pure symbols of greed and hunger.

Towers of glass rise across the land as money builds a world shaped entirely by commerce and capital.

People declare that possessing great wealth is a sign of divine grace, turning the rich into a new priestly class.

Wise men choose to rationalize the creation of deserts rather than accept responsibility for the destruction.

Wise men describe the barren desert as a serene and orderly place in which to apprehend the absolute.

Wise men elevate a single stone in the sand at sunset as the highest possible form of aesthetic experience.

The number zero becomes holy as a nihilistic philosophy replaces all earlier systems of belief and meaning.

The final narrator describes the barren, dried lakeshore where they have come to bury the last record of their people.

This pool focuses on the concrete details and secondary moments that give each age its texture and meaning. In the first age, people paint mythological scenes on temple walls and craft god statues from precious metals, celebrating a divine world they feel part of. The invention of money in the second age introduces coins whose two faces capture a power struggle between the old nature gods and the rising authority of human kings. In the third age, money builds towers of glass and gains a political voice, while the wealthy are elevated to a priestly class whose riches signal divine approval. By the fourth age, wise men justify the devastation by aestheticizing the desert, praising its barrenness as orderly beauty and declaring the number zero sacred. The pool ends with the final narrator describing the desolate lakeshore setting where the time capsule is laid to rest.

The specific images and details that build each age.

People of the first age sense themselves embedded in a world of millions of living creatures, feeling no separation from nature.

People stop making sacred god sculptures and begin minting coins, redirecting their craft from worship toward commerce.

The old gods are forgotten as money, stamped with their former animal imagery, rises to claim their place in people's devotion.

The aspiration to fly through accumulating money marks the complete inversion of people's original earthly connection.

Money gains the power to create on its own, mirroring the Genesis-like creative force once attributed to the divine.

Money creates catastrophic inequality, producing simultaneous feasts for some and famines for others across the world.

Money's appetite turns toward the lives of children, revealing that no living thing is sheltered from its hunger.

The belief that wealth proves divine favor grows so entrenched that no one questions the damage accumulation causes.

The first deserts appear, marking the irreversible moment when the pursuit of money begins destroying the natural world outright.

People continue making deserts even as wars and plagues arrive as unmistakable signals that their civilization is collapsing.

Wise men respond to total environmental collapse by aestheticizing destruction, calling the sterile wastelands sublime.

The last living creatures vanish from the earth, leaving behind a silent, tidied emptiness where abundance once flourished.

The story's collective voice fractures into a singular first-person as the last remaining person on the planet prepares to die.

The final narrator's closing words recall the old dream that money could grant flight, now understood as the hubris that ended the world.

The dying narrator addresses unknown future readers directly, offering the dead planet as a warning not to repeat the same mistakes.

This pool highlights the pivotal shifts in belief, power, and consequence that move the civilization from one age to the next. The first age's balanced reverence for a chaotic, living world gives way to the second age's abstraction, as people stop relating to nature directly and begin mediating everything through money. Money's magical power of exchange convinces people they have found a new god, and the conviction that wealth signals divine favor removes any check on money's growing appetite. By the third age, money's hunger has turned toward children and armies as well as forests, revealing that no living thing is safe from unchecked greed. The fourth age's most damning turn is not the creation of deserts but the wise men's choice to call those deserts beautiful, a rationalization that ensures no course correction will ever come. The pool closes with the narrative voice collapsing from a collective people to a single, solitary survivor, whose final words reframe the civilization's fatal ambition as a cautionary warning to the universe.
