Lottie follows Kelsie home, kills her with a claw hammer, and stages the scene to appear as a fatal shower accident.

Lottie realizes she brought her smartphone to Kelsie's house, leaving location data that places her at the crime scene.

Lottie attends Kelsie's funeral, befriends Detective Tula, and claims Kelsie had been secretly building a case against Cole Fletcher.

Norma drugs Lottie's wine and ties her to a chair; Lottie escapes by tricking her and kills Norma with her cane.

Lottie uses Norma's severed finger to unlock her phone and discovers encrypted messages proving Burke orchestrated the entire docuseries plot.

Lottie discovers Burke's hidden camera, plants it herself, and stages a fake murder scene for Burke to witness remotely.

Lottie breaks into Burke's home in Spokane, disarms him, and stages an explosion using his oxygen tank to frame Norma for the deaths.

Lottie Jones's quiet retirement is shattered when documentary filmmaker Plum Dixon arrives to expose her past crimes, forcing Lottie to kill her and begin a meticulous cover-up. When Plum's boyfriend Cole and then two detectives arrive asking questions, Lottie performs the role of a frail, helpful widow to direct suspicion toward Cole. Detective Kelsie Harlow breaks from the investigation to blackmail Lottie privately, and Lottie eliminates her with a claw hammer before staging a convincing shower accident. Plum's mother Norma arrives next and nearly forces a confession by tying Lottie to a chair, but Lottie escapes and kills her too. Using Norma's own phone, Lottie uncovers the true mastermind—retired detective Kenneth Burke—and turns his own hidden camera against him by staging a fake murder scene. She travels to Spokane for a final confrontation, disarms the wheelchair-bound Burke, and engineers an explosion that frames Norma for all the deaths.

Kelsie visits Lottie on her day off in workout clothes and reveals that Plum appeared on no flight manifest out of Salem.

A news report announces that Detective Kelsie Harlow was found dead, with authorities ruling the death an accidental fall.

Lottie visits Norma's hotel room wearing Norma's clothes and places a room service order to maintain the illusion that Norma is still alive.

Using a prepaid phone and voice-changing software, Lottie calls Norma anonymously with a synthesized male voice warning her not to trust 'him.'

Morgan arrives unexpectedly at Lottie's house, unannounced, to finalize wedding venue arrangements in the area.

A small container falls from Lottie's freezer while Morgan is in the kitchen, revealing a severed human finger inside.

While Lottie disposes of Plum's remains across multiple days, the outside world begins closing in through phone calls from Cole Fletcher and an unexpected announcement from her son Archie about his upcoming wedding. Her web of lies to the detectives is built up detail by detail, and Kelsie's first unofficial solo visit plants the seed of doubt that will grow into blackmail. After Kelsie's death is ruled accidental, Lottie shifts her focus to managing Norma Dixon's arrival by visiting her hotel room in disguise, launching anonymous voice-changed phone calls, and feeding false suspicions to Detective Tula. Morgan's surprise visit nearly exposes Lottie when a severed finger falls from the freezer, demanding a fast and convincing improvisation. Lottie burns Norma's remains just as she burned Plum's, methodically erasing each body while maintaining the appearance of ordinary daily life. The story ultimately closes with Cole Fletcher returning with a proposal that offers Lottie a new purpose, and her choice to become his co-producer rather than his next victim.

The secondary moves and escalating complications behind the main events.

Lottie reconciles with Archie, sells her house, and moves into Oak Manor retirement community on terms she negotiated herself.

Lottie's violence is rooted in a founding turning point—her murder of Gary, a man who dismissed her for being unmarried, establishing a lifelong pattern of lethal responses to being judged. Her choice to keep Plum's case file rather than burn it links her buried past to her present danger, while her decision to stalk and then deliberately murder Kelsie rather than pay the blackmail reflects a calculated shift in strategy. The discovery that her smartphone recorded her location at Kelsie's house forces a terrifying reckoning with her own aging mind, and her subsequent manipulation of both Norma and Detective Tula reveals her intelligence still fully intact. A cascade of revelations exposes the true architecture of the plot against her—Burke's use of facial recognition, his decades of obsession, and his final confession that he wanted to be remembered—stripping away any ambiguity about who her real enemy is. Archie's admission that he secretly installed a tracking app on her phone delivers a different kind of blow, collapsing the boundary between the surveillance she fears from enemies and the concern of her own family. By the novel's end, Lottie has accepted her physical limits, moved into Oak Manor on her own negotiated terms, and redefined what control in the next chapter of her life can look like.
