Feeling disconnected from ordinary American life and afraid of aging, John Steinbeck outfits a custom camper truck and sets off on a cross-country road trip with his dog Charley. After a dramatic delay caused by a hurricane, he departs Long Island and slowly works his way through New England, finding locals reserved and difficult to engage. He reconnects briefly with his wife in Chicago before pushing west through the Dakotas, where Fargo disappoints him, and into Montana and the Pacific Northwest, where Charley's unexpected illness forces a rushed detour to a veterinarian. Arriving in California, Steinbeck visits the ancient redwood forests before reaching his hometown of Salinas, which has grown so dramatically he barely recognizes it. His journey then turns dark in New Orleans, where he witnesses white protesters screaming at a Black child entering a newly integrated school. After leaving the South in despair, Steinbeck races home and gets hopelessly lost in New York City just miles from his own front door.

After rejoining his main route through the Midwest, he discovers the unexpected beauty of the Wisconsin Dells and visits Sinclair Lewis's hometown before stumbling into a memorable nighttime conversation with a wandering actor in North Dakota. Crossing into the West, he pauses at the Little Big Horn battlefield to reflect on the history of Indigenous removal before heading into the desert, where two coyotes prompt a surprising act of mercy. Early setbacks, like being turned away from Canada for missing paperwork, give way to a grinding realization on Interstate 90 that modern highways cut travelers off from the very culture Steinbeck is trying to find. The interior of the country delivers his most dramatic shifts in mood: an eerie foreboding in the Dakotas leads to a night in the Badlands that transforms from terrifying to peacefully revelatory, and Montana emerges as the America he has been searching for. Small human dramas — a son's secret ambition, a flat tire in Oregon, the relief of finding San Francisco unchanged — punctuate the final western miles before California brings bittersweet closure on a mountaintop above his unrecognizable hometown. Texas offers a lavish Thanksgiving respite with his wife before the South shatters whatever distance remained between Steinbeck and the country's racial wounds, leaving him to pick up two Black hitchhikers whose contrasting fear and defiance say more about America than any landscape he crossed.
