Each discovery strips away another layer of safety: Charlie is gone, the duke sent him deliberately, the ship she boarded is a smuggler's vessel, and the captain she now serves plans to sell her to a dragon. Tress responds by turning fear into knowledge, using spores she once dreaded to spy, invent weapons, and navigate the seas. Crucial truths surface along the way—that Crow is dying, that Huck has a secret connection to the Sorceress, and that only Hoid can truly defeat her. The deepest revelation is saved for last: Huck the rat has been Charlie all along, transformed and protecting Tress in the only way the curse allowed him to. The story closes as Tress finally accepts help from those she loves and leads her found family away from the Rock forever.
